Baltimore: Cushings & Bailey, 1870. Hardcover. A comprehensive compilation of the English statutes still entirely or partially in force in Maryland at that time. The editor, Julian Alexander, mildly congratulates himself in the preface for providing the original texts of relevant statutes in an accessible and convenient form. In addition to the text of statutes, there are a list of the statutes, names of cases cited, and an index to principal matters. The book was previously owned by Baltimore attorney William C. Holland. His ownership signature dated 3/22/41 is written in ink on the title page and he has stamped his name on each of the edges and the spine. Either he or another owner of the book wrote a list of the sections and citations to two cases on the front pastedown. There are also occasional light pencil underlining and margin notes. Despite these markings the text pages are in very good condition, with light aging to pages and a few closed tears on few pages of the principal matters index. Bound in tan cloth with red title and black author labels to spine. Binding is rubbed and lightly soiled but still nice. 847 pages. LAW/071217. Very Good.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1852. Hardcover. Ex-library from W. Wilson Moffat's English, French, and Italian Circulating Library, Edinburgh. According to his bookplate, Mr. Moffat was a bookseller, printer, and binder. His bookplate in the front of both volumes and the number 77 in ink on the front pastedown are the only evidence that this was part of a circulating library. Very good in original maroon cloth boards with gilt titles to spines and embossed decoration to spines and boards. Minor wear to edges of boards. Both bindings are slightly rolled. Clean interiors with only a few light smudge marks and notes in pencil on the rear free endpage of volume one. 310 pages in volume 1; 319 pages in volume 2. Covers abatement, affidavits, pleas, assignment, bankruptcy, bonds, courts, creditors, deeds, evidence, executors, heirs, idiots & lunaticks, limitations of suits, mortgages, titles, will, writs, etc. Quarto. Very good in original full leather binding with red leather label and raised bands on spine. The front cover is detached with slight evidence of prior repair to hinge. Heavy scuffing and wear to boards including chips to the leather and spine ends. The interior is very clean with a few light smudge marks and previous owner's name to front endpage and top of title page. Printed in Roman, Italic and Gothic typefaces. A classic trial, which was held 1850 - "Here was a cultivated man, the holder of two chairs at Harvard, distinguished in the social world, who planned and carried through the murder of Doctor Parkman, a wealthy philanthropist and a prominet figure in university and Boston society" (jacket). Near fine in red cloth boards with gilt title to spine and front cover. Minor browning to pages, but clean aside from previous owner's name in pen to front free endpage. Slight offsetting from jacket to spine cloth. In black and white striped dust jacket with black title to spine and front panels. Baltimore: Fielding Lucas, Jr., 1838. Hardcover. Scarce original edition of the first compilation of Maryland's testamentary laws. Clement Dorsey (1778-1848) was a congressman and later a judge for the 5th Circuit Court of Maryland. The publisher, Fielding Lucas (1781-1854), was a prominent 19th century cartographer and publisher. Bound in brown leather. Joints and hinges are weak, spine is missing and leather is scraped and stained. Introductory pages are loose, but the rest of the text is intact. Bookplate of Leonadis Coyle on front pastedown. Philadelphia: Robert H. Small, 1847. Hardcover. Scarce First American Edition of this seminal treatise by Sir Matthew Hale first published posthumously in 1736. Sir Matthew (1609 - 1676) was an influential barrister and judge who served as the Lord Chief Justice of the Court of the King's Bench whose central legacy is considered by many to be this work on capital offenses. It included two sections, one on the substantive law and one on associated procedures. The American edition provides notes and references to every relevant federal and state statute and case by W.A. Stokes and E. Ingersoll of the Philadelphia Bar. This work thus gives U.S. lawyers the applications of common law to the statutes and cases relevant to their their jurisdictions and legal issues. With tables of cases, principal matters, and abbreviations. Bound in tan leather with red title labels to spines. Spines are browned and creased, corners are lightly bumped and soiled. Small gouge to lower left front cover in Volume I. Offsetting to free endpapers and occasional spots on pages. The book was owned by Baltimore attorney William C. Holland, with his ownership signature dated 3/12/42 on title page of Volume I and name stamp on page edges and spine. He has written pencil notes on the pastedowns and free front endpaper in both volumes (including when he started and finished reading the book) and has underlined some passages in the book in light pencil. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott and Company, 1860. Hardcover. SCARCE. Very good in brown cloth covered boards with gilt title to spine. Chipping to the head and foot of spine and there is a significant split in the binding between the 2 vols. The stitching is still attached in the split, but it is visibly loose. No pages are detached. There is also a small stain in the bottom margin of the first few pages. This remains a good reading copy with bright text. Law. LAW1/1302. Very Good.
Annapolis: Jehu Chandler, 1811. Hardcover. Thomas J. Pratt's copy with his ownership signature on three pages. It is crossed out on the top of the title page. Pratt (1804 - 1869) served as both a US senator and the governor of Maryland. He was a Whig but later switched to the Democratic Party after the Whigs were dissolved. This book is also ex-library from Ober, Grimes, and Shriver - National Bank Building in Baltimore with stamp to front free endpaper and evidence of removed signout card to rear pastedown. In a modern binding of beige buckram with black title "Kilty's English Statutes 1811" to spine. Clean overall aside from markings mentioned above, light foxing throughout, and browning to margins on early and late pages. Size: Quarto. 289 pages plus errata. MD/032520. Very Good.
