Maxine is Carolyn’s beloved feline friend and companion, and the book describes a day in Maxine’s life through text and illustrations. Maxine begins her story: “Sun’s up, I get to go out. Yes, yes, I know, ‘Be careful,’ the howling creatures may still be about. What, you think I don’t know that? What I need to know is, who has been in my yard? Mr. Smushy-face? Walter? Or that grey and white bruiser? ...” Each page includes a hand-colored intaglio print of Maxine at various moments in her day (11 prints altogether). The text is Bernhard Modern type on lovely Fabriano Rosapina Bianco paper. Oblong folio bound in grey linen with black spine. Paw prints decorate the front cover and endpapers. Number 3 of 10 copies. In her colophon, Sibyl Rubottom gives her love and thanks “to the father I never knew who named me Sibyl hoping I would be shrewd in business. That did not occur, but I did end up making books.” This beautiful book is about five ancient Sibyls, including how they were depicted in Western art. These Sibyls are the Cumean, Delphic, Erythraean, Persian, and the Libyan. They offered prophecies, often through the use of leaves, as being from the thoughts of the gods. There is a brief description of each, accompanied by an intaglio leaf print and a reproduction of each Sibyl from the work of Michelangelo (four plates) or Velasquez (one plate). Each Sibyl is presented within a fold-out page with the description on the facing page and the plate and illustration inside the fold. Bound in red cloth with green spine, with title and author on front cover. The book was printed on Dutch etching paper in Bodoni, Bernard Modern, Albertus, and Patatino types. There are eight intaglio prints, each signed by the book artist. Housed in a brown paper covered case lined with the same red cloth as the book covers. She grew up watching her movies trying "to relive the fabulous water ballet sequences." As an adult her love of water continued and she began swimming in La Jolla Cove near her home and later in an olympic sized outdoor pool in Mission Valley. She dedicates this book to La Jolla Cove, one of her regular swimming spots when the water is warm enough. Illustrated with six etchings and three unique oil paintings on mylar. This out-of print book is an exquisite work from Sibyl Rubottom and Jim Machacek. It was inspired by Sibyl’s interest in all things botanical and Jim’s family heritage. The result is what they hoped for - "a riotous colorscape for your senses” - with rich and luminous colors and beautiful illustrations. It includes 14 unbound folded folio sized leaves that are housed in a folding case. Twelve of the leaves are dedicated to different types of gardens, each in a different color, with designs and writings to reflect that garden. The gardens are: Japanese, butterfly, desert, night, orchid, primordial, mystical, rose, water, Eros, secret, and herb. Each features a poem or prose by such writers as John Milton, Rumi, Homer, Lord Byron, Robert Frost, Oscar Wilde, Frances Hodgson Burnett, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. The two other folded leaves are for the title and for the colophon. Printed on Fabriano Rosapina Blanco paper in Venus, Edwardian Script, and Palatino typefaces using letterpress, monoprint, and intaglio techniques. Housed in a custom box in brown cloth lined with handmade paper. The covers open from the middle with a title label on one side and a small metal rectangle with wooden peg closure on the other. Various spices are described by definition, quotes, or history, and accompanied by lovely images on tan color pages that were hand-tinted with spice dyes. Some of the pages had an "intoxicating 14 runs through the press." The accordion text pages are encased in stiff paper covers, with the top flap cut out in the shape of leaves. Its founders, Sibyl Rubottom and Jim Marachacek, have gone on to create many more wonderful books. This work is based on a poem by the 13th century Suni mystic, Rumi. It is constructed from a single sheet of white Fabriano Rosapina paper that has been cut , folded, and printed in shades of blue, light orange, and red. The cover paper is Fox River Confetti. The text is in various sizes of Bodoni and Times Roman. The images were created with polymer plates, monotypes, a linocut, and screen printing. The cover has cleverly cut out a diamond in a pleated page edge, and has printed a brief history of Rumi within the diamond. In fine condition. PRI/073112. Fine.
London: William Heinemann, 1921. Hardcover. Inscribed by Beerbohm with Autograph Letter Signed laid in. The book is inscribed on the half title to S.J. Williams, “Dear Mr. Williams I am so very glad you see to like [And Even Now] and I thank you very much - Max Beerbohm May, 1943.” Laid in is a letter to Williams along with the envelope in which it was sent. The letterhead is “Abinger Manor Cottage, Abinger Common, Nr. Dorking.” In this charming letter Beerbohm writes: “June 15 1943/Dear Mr. Williams/I write to tell you, with many thanks, how proud I am to be the subject of an epigram so perfect in pre-, com-, and incision. Epigrams are usually unkind in wit. Wit and kindness are rather distantly related to each other. But here they seem to be [the word are is crossed out below this] brother and sister, and will abide in my heart as well as in my brain. With kindest regards from my wife and me to Mrs. Williams and to you, I am sincerely and gratefully yours, Max Beerbohm.” The envelope is addressed S.J. Williams, Prof/Queens’ College/Cambridge. The flap of the envelope is affixed to the front endpaper opposite the half title page. There is one fold in the letter otherwise in fine condition. Book is bound in original yellow cloth with paper title label to spine. Soiled and bumped but in very good condition. Interior pages are clean and tight. 320 pages. LIT/042012. Very Good.
Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae Press, 1982. Hardcover. UNIQUE COPY WITH A SET OF THE 26 ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWINGS BY ALAN JAMES ROBINSON. There were 300 copies of this book published; 200 were regular copies, 50 were deluxe copies with quarter leather binding and 50 others bound in full leather. The deluxe editions were issued with a set of proofs of the wood engravings and a set of proofs of the line-cut initials, with a large calligraphic manuscript initial beneath each image. The wood engraving proofs are lettered and signed by Robinson, and the line-cut proofs are signed both by Robinson and the calligrapher, Elizabeth Curtis. This copy shows some variation from the copies described in the prospectus. The colophon has been signed and numbered VI of L and internally seems to be a straightforward copy of the deluxe full leather edition. The binding varies somewhat from that pictured in the prospectus but uses many of the same elements. Also, the chemise is thicker that the regular chemise because it contains the 26 pencil drawings. This may have been a special copy prepared by Robinson for a particular subscriber/collector. This wonderful abecedary illustrates each letter of the alphabet with a masterful wood engraving by Robinson. Each animal is described at the bottom of its page in texts chosen primarily from the earliest first-hand accounts of the animal depicted. The descriptions are printed in red. The printed source of each text is identified, and at the end of the book there is a detailed and useful bibliography of these sources. A page with a small, different illustration of the animal precedes each animal’s page, with the calligraphic letter written in red by Curtis. The animals depicted are often wondrous and strange, and some, such as the basilisk, may never have actually existed. This is a two volume folio (including a chemise containing an additional suite of illustrations, and the group of original pencil drawings). The bound volume is in full red morocco, done by David Bourbeau of the Thistle Bindery. The covers have a large central, slightly sunken panel, with the title in red and black and with a Sea Turtle device blocked in blind (Cheloniidae is the name for a species of sea turtles). The proofs contained in the chemise are unbound as issued within the original red morocco-backed, linen cloth covered boards. Both volumes are housed in a red morocco-backed cloth covered box, with the spine lettered and dated in gilt and a small Sea Turtle device in blind. “The blocks were cut by the artist at the Cheloniidae Press & printed by Harold P. McGrath in the summer of 1982.... Mackenzie-Harris set the types in monotype with some hand-setting by Arthur Larson. The text was compiled and annotated by Laurie Block. The hand calligraphy is by Betsy Curtis. The paper is Rives lightweight” (from the colophon). The 8-page prospectus is laid in. A remarkable production from this press. In fine condition. PRI/020112. London: Ward and Downey Limiited, 1894. Hardcover. First Edition. An exceptionally nice copy of this rather scarce work. John Davidson (1857-1909) was a Scottish poet and dramatist who also wrote a few novels, of which this is one. It is thought that he drowned himself because of depression and hopelessness. His body was found a few months later. Baptist Lake is the the protagonist, and the book follows his life after he returns to his childhood home of Pilgrimstow as a young man. Bound in smooth black cloth with gilt title to front board and spine, and is in near fine condition. Original patterned endpapers. The interior pages are clean, just showing the slightest aging to the margins. There is a very slight separation of a middle gathering, caused by the book being laid open flat. 351 pages. LIT/081309. Interesting presentation copy from the author to Lyster Ryle, the manager of the Imperial Theatre, where the play was first produced in 1901: “To Lyster Ryle with kind regards from John Davidson ‘Now, a truce to your reproaches.’” This line was said by the character Don Caesar in the first act. Bound in original red cloth with title and author in gilt on spine and front cover. Lightly bumped corners but in very good condition. William Falconer (1744-1824) was an English physician who was a frequent contributor of papers to learned societies on a range of medical subjects. He wrote on such topics as bath waters, nephritis, fevers, gout, and the influence of climate. This work was the first psychiatric prize essay awarded the Fothergillian Medal in 1787 by the Medical Society of London. Bound in contemporary mottled goatskin, with gilt ruled panels, raised spine bands, and embossed compartmental fleurons, with red leather spine label. Embossed library stamp to the title page and one internal page. There is light foxing throughout, and a few pages are neatly repaired at the gutters, else a handsome copy. 105 pages plus advertisements. MED/032520. Very Good.

First published in 1899, the book introduced Freud’s theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation, his theories of psychoanalysis, and the subconscious. Its influence has extended far outside the field of psychiatry into culture and literature. Very good in brown cloth with marbled paper covered boards and gilt title to spine. Minor fraying and wear to spine ends, joints, and edges of boards. The interior hinges have been repaired with green binder’s tape. A beautiful and sumptuous work in French on the life and art of the great Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli. In his preface, the author describes his careful research and authentication process on the artist’s work, saying it was necessary because Botticelli had so many disciples who imitated his style. There are 70 plates, of which nine are in color, plus a color frontispiece of a Botticelli self-portrait. For each work there is a plate of the full painting, followed by one or more plates with details from it. The color plates are all details of Botticelli’s exquisite portraiture. Plates 1-66 follow the text pages; plates 67-70 are bound in with the text. Bound in three quarter red leather with marbled paper covered boards and raised bands and gilt title to spine. Original paper covers bound in. Some staining to edges of some of the text pages, not affecting the plates. Each plate has a tissue guard printed with the title and location of the painting. Hingham, MA: Maryanne Grebenstein, 2012. Hardcover. Features text from a biblical verse. Taking inspiration from a 15th century manuscript, calligrapher Maryanne Grebenstein has created an unique book that has been lettered, decorated, gilded, and bound by hand. Using the same materials and techniques employed by scribes for centuries, Grebenstein carefully letters each word, uses raised 23K gold leaf, and hand paints each border decoration. The page proportions are kept to the traditional ratio, utilizing the centuries old ‘gold rule’ established during the Renaissance. Each page has a similar but not identical border design, following the design principal utilized in the prayer book. Written on Zerkall ingres paper. Beautifully bound by Samuel Feinstein in full blue Niger Oasis goatskin with gilt title to spine and front cover. The front cover features a rose onlay in red and green leather. Glenview, IL: Karen Hanmer, 2010. Hardcover. Number 21 of 25 copies in the Deluxe Edition. The edition consists of 125 copies of which 25 are deluxe, 50 are standard, and 50 are printed as chapbooks. Noted book artist Karen Hanmer examines the writings of Edgar Allan Poe and compares modern events to his stories. She examines Poe's "The Premature Burial" and compares nineteenth century fears of being buried alive to modern day people being buried in dept and unemployment. Perhaps most relevant to current events (even though Hanmer wrote this in 2010) is her examination of Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" in which the plague is an "uninvited guest" at a masquerade within the suppossedly impregnable castle walls. In reflection on Poe's story, Hanmer writes: "In the new century, Americans have had the opportunity to realize that we are not as invulnerable as it is comforting to believe. Very bad things do happen here. We find ourselves unprepared for the events and with no plan for recovery in the aftermath."“The physical structure, typography, and design for the paper wrapper ... are based on the first edition of Poe’s first published work, Tamerlane and Other Poems. Only twelve copies of this modest pamphlet are known to exist of the fifty printed in Boston in 1827” (Hanmer). This copy is presented in an early 19th century boarded binding based upon a technique taught by Jeff Peachey. Bound in marbled paper covered boards with beige paper spine and title label to the front board. The paper was marbled by Pamela Smith. Inkjet printed on Ruscombe Mill pale wove handmade paper. Basel, Switzerland: Romano Hänni, 2007. Paperback. 1 of 306 copies. This work by Swiss book artist, Romano Hänni, is a hand printed eight page altar fold with banderole and a card with a poem. The text is in German and an eight page pictorial supplement with translation in English is also included. This work is about the horrors of war and military injustice. There are multiple stories about war and murder including a piece about 306 British soldiers who were court-martialed for ‘cowardice in the face of the enemy’ and shot during World War I by their comrades. In 2006 - ninety years later - these men were pardoned. The enclosed poem is “Glory of Women” by Sigfried Sassoon. The banderole, which is printed on toilet paper, represents the blindfolds of the executed men. It features a wood engraving of a French Military Cross on the front and a statement about four French soldiers who were court-martialed in 1915 and shot in the back. A powerful piece. [8 pages]. There are a few light smudge marks to the covers and the spine is slightly darkened. Minor rubbing to edges of boards. The color plates are foxed and the margins of the textual pages are browned. Paris: Goujon fils, An X, . Hardcover. First Edition of this famous work. Jean Itard (1774-1838) was a French doctor who was known as an educator of deaf-mutes. He tried to test his educational theories in the celebrated case of Victor - The Wild Boy - of Aveyron. The boy was found in the woods in a feral state and was believed to have lived there for years. Itard worked to make the boy “normal,” but failed. In this first report Itard was optimistic about the feral child’s prospects for language acquisition and socialization. In his 1807 second report his conclusions were much more pessimistic, as even after a number of years of intensive education the boy had been unable to learn to speak. Itard’s methods, described in his two reports, were based upon the philosopher Condillac’s analytical approach to the acquisition of knowledge, which had been used with success in the teaching of deaf-mutes. However, Itard created a new system of pedagogy in adapting this approach to the needs of this extraordinary boy. [Haskell Norman Catalog 1144]. A small octavo bound in modern marbled brown paper covered boards with gilt-stamped spine. Lacking the frontispiece portrait of the “Wild Boy” and trimmed a bit closely at the top margin, otherwise very good with minor foxing.
