New York: A.C. Armstrong & Son, 1887. Hardcover. A scarce New York edition of a book published the same year, 1887, in London by T. Fisher Unwin. A box opposite the title page states that this is copy 300, but does not say what these copies were. The book reproduces the text of the history of the cross and the fascinating woodcuts that were published by Veldener in 1483. The introduction and preface were writtin for this 1887 edition. Bound in gray covers with reproductions of early illustrations in black of Christ on the cross on both the front and back covers. Binding is rubbed, lightly chipped and with a spine torn on the top and bottom edges. With metal clasps that hold the covers closed. Front hinge slightly cracked but holding firm. Bookplate of Isabelle Williams affixed to front pastedown. The texts are 62 pages followd by the reproductions of the 64 woodcuts. The black and white reproductions have explanatory text in red with a translation in English written in blackbeneath. Page edges are wrinkled and occasionally chipped but still very good otherwise. .An interesting and unusual reproduction of this medieval work. Measures 5.5 x 8 inches. Very Good.
