Quattrocentisteria: How Sandro Botticelli saw Simonetta in the Spring
New York: The Grolier Clu, 1921. Hardcover. One of 300 copies printed by John Henry Nash. It was produced by the Committee on Publications of the Grolier Club as part of a series of six books done by eminent American printers at the Club's invitation. With the bookplates of Wilbert Parsons Sachs and Huntington Williams, and with an ownership inscription of Huntington Williams signed in Baltimiore in 1947. Dr. Williams was Baltimore's Commissioner of Health beginning in 1932 and serving for 30 years until he retired in 1962, having been born in 1892. This beautiful book commissioned by the Grolier Club is bound in decorated light gray and cream papers with a light brown cloth spine. Three color illustrations of Botticelli's birth of Venus have been glued in on two of the blank first leafs of the book. Lovely black printing of the text with the first page having an elaborate red initial Qon the title. Some light rippling of some of the handmade paper text pages.. On the last page are brief notes and dates written by previous owners in the 1940s, 1961, 1964, and 1971. Dr. William's invoice dated November 1947 for this book and another title from New York book dealer Philip Duschnes is laid in. He paid $10 for this book. Very good plus condition.
