Hammersmith, England: Kelmscott Press, 1895. Hardcover. One of 300 paper copies printed for America. Another 225 paper copies were printed for England. This was the only Kelmscott Press book printed for the United States. Rossetti wrote the work in 1849 for the short lived journal, the Germ. It was not republished until it appeared in the Fortnightly Review in 1870. This work was selected as something small that could be printed and then sold at a modest cost in the U.S.(see Peterson bibliography, pages 91-93). Original vellum boards with title in gilt to spine. Gilt lightly faded. Elaborate woodcuts on double title pages. Margin titles in red with decorated initials throughout. With ownership signature of John Drinkwater. Drinkwater (1882-1937) was an English poet, dramatist, and critic. Colophon states, "Finished the 24th day of October 1895. Sold by Way and Williams Chicago." Altogether a lovely copy in fine condition of a beautiful book from the famed Kelmscott Press. 56 pages. PRI/070526. Fine.
