Rutland, VT: Carolyn Shattuck, n.d. Hardcover. Number 1 of 5 copies signed and numbered by the book artist. This is another inventive work from well-known artist Carolyn Shattuck that displays her skill in using various book structures to convey meaning and context in the books she creates. In addition to artists' books, she is a painter and creator of paper art. Carolyn exhibits her work nationally in numerous juried exhibitions and has received many awards. Her books have been collected by a number of special collections libraries at universities throughout the country. She teaches book art workshops in New England and Florida.

VAX was created by Carolyn because of her deep concern over the controversy regarding necessary vaccinations, the lack of immunizations administered, and the resulting threat to children's health. Her concern is expressed through this complex book's structure and messages. When the book is opened, there is a pop-up thin strip of paper spriralizing across the two pages. On it she lists the various immunizations and the diseases they address. Underneath this spiral is a foldout stating "Vaccinations allowed me to have a long life." She has another long foldout that has the text of Roald Dahl's "heartbreaking letter about losing his daughter in 1962." She died of measles at the age of seven. Bound in paper with a multi-colored grid design with a black cloth spine. Signed title label affixed to front cover. Housed in a black paper covered slipcase with titling on white paper label on front. In fine condition. Measures 9 x 11 inches. ARTB/121225.
Fine.
