Lowlands Away: An Oratorio
Bath, UK: Old School Press, 2001. Paperback. Number 258 of 450 copies. Forty copies including this one were issued in sheets to binders. An illustrated collection of poems about being lost at sea. In a unique design binding created by Pamela S. Wood at her bindery, Rarehare Creations in 2022. Handbound in stiff, dark blue, handmade linen paper with handsewn accents to represent waves on both covers. Triangular title and author labels which represent boat flags are attached to both covers amongst the waves of thread. The labels are Harmatan colored goatskin with hand tooled lettering and 14 kt gold thread accents. Visible binding stitches to spine panel. Bound in the limp vellum style. The text is letterpress printed in Monotype Gill Sans 262 on Rivoli paper. The pastel drawings were printed at the Senecio Press by Adrian Lack. Clean and bright with light blue endpapers. The book is housed in a dark green cloth covered clamshell box with pink trays and pink title label to spine panel. The box and binding were both created by Pamela S. Wood. Unpaginated. [32 pages.] Book Size: quarto, about 10.5 x 7.75 inches.
Academically trained in fine art, Pamela received a BFA in Printmaking from Kent State University and did post-graduate studies in graphic design at Cleveland Institute of Art. Pamela works primarily in paper and book arts and continues to exhibit her one-of-a-kind books at various art centers and museums, both nationally and internationally. Many of her artist's books have been acquired by different local, national, and international libraries and museums for their permanent collections. She has been the recipient of several professional development grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and was the recipient of a fellowship from the Women's Studio Workshop in New York. Pamela has studied at The American Academy of Bookbinding and with numerous master binders, including Helene Jolis, Don Glaister, and Monique Lallier. She produces fine bindings and artist’s books full time in her Tempe, AZ studio, Rarehare Creations. ARTB/071725. Fine.
