Bride and Groom Lie Hidden For Three Days
(Niagara Falls, NY): Carol Schwartzott, 1993. Unnumbered from a limited edition. There are no copies in commerce nor any listed on WorldCat, indicating how small this edition was. This is a beautiful and unusual work from this book artist. In this, Carol is inspired by and venerates the text of this lovely poem from the great Ted Hughes. Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was a prominent English poet, playwright, translator, and children's writer, known for his powerful and often nature-focused poetry. He served as Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death in 1998. He was married for several years to the American poet Sylvia Plath, a relationship that significantly impacted his life and work.
The poem by Hughes glorifies and expresses reverence of the act of marriage by describing the private and joyous first days of a couple's marriage. The poem explores themes of love, intimacy, and the relationship between two individuals. The title itself, with the phrase "lie hidden," hints at the intensity and perhaps even secrecy or withdrawal of the couple during the initial days of their union. This work from Carol offers an evocative and lovely tribute to Hughes by creating a romantic book to celebrate this poem. The book is made with handmade paper with hand painted illustrations that flow one into the next on a single accordion fold. The text and images join together to present this poem, with the text offered on one side of the accordion pages along with Carol's colorful images. The book is bound in beige hand made paper with colorful decorative small ornamental designs. Housed in a slipcase covered in the same paper, enhanced b Accompanied by two separate sheets, one with a description of the book with three images of illustrations, and the other with the text of the poem.
