Gone Fishing: Timeless Quotes about Fishing

Freeville, NY: Carol Schwartzott, 2024. Hardcover. Number 8 of 10 copies signed and numbered by the book artist. This charming and exuberant book by Carol reaches back to another book she produced in 2005, "Beyond Ichthyology". Carol writes that Ichthyology was her "swan song" at the time as her letterpress printer left to go to law school. All copies of that book are now in libraries and public collections. She continues, saying that lately she has been revisiting many of her former pieces, and enjoying the subject of fish, she decided to do another work on fishing, based on information from her research on the 2005 work. She utilized the typography of the original book, and from there "the adventure began." This new work has five sections, each beginning with a small fish collage and opens to reveal two famous quotes about fish and fishing. The quotes are from Lau Tzu, Henry David Thoreau, Rupert Brooke, Ernest Hemingway, and Ovid. Preceding the colophon is a statement about the distress our oceans and rivers are in and that fish are disappearing due to overcatch and pollution. The various color fish that decorate the pages are scans of historical fish illustrations, many hand-colored with color pencils with decorative sewing elements. Bound in blue boards with two fish collaged on cover. The book structure is a pull-out accordion that can also be viewed as a classic codex. The handsome box housing the book is covered in blue papers and has three collaged fish on its top. With a light blue spine label with titling. In fine condition. Book measures 6.5 x 6.5 inches. Unpaginated. ARTB/082824. Fine.
