London: Bell & Daldy, 1870. Second Edition. This print comes from the six volume work, A History of British Birds, written by Rev. Francis Orpen Morris, comprised of some of the most accurate drawings and information about British birds and their habitats. Morris was prolific in his authorship of Natural History books and articles. Alexander Francis Lydon was one of Morris's principal engravers, contributing much in technique and design. A team of women colorists under very strict scrutiny hand colored each plate. The prints are presented on a greenish tan or biscuit color background, which is associated with the earliest printings of these books. Print method is Woodcut (Xylographic) engraving with superb original hand color Plate printed on one side, blank on reverse. Print measures 220 x 125 mm or approximately 8 3/4 x 4 7/8 inches. Leaf measures 243 x 144 mm or approximately 9 5/8 x 5 5/8 inches. Archivally matted. #46368. Very Good.
