The inscription reads "Matthew John Poole/in remembrance of a very happy/Christmas at Ramsgate/James Ashcroft Noble/January 10, 1894."James Ashcroft Noble (1844-1896) was a well known critic and essayist in his time. He was also an aesthete and a great admirer of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In this book he states that Rossetti's sonnets were "purely artistic." Bound in brown cloth with gilt author and title to spine and to front cover which also has a lovely gilt design.Some bumping to the corners and spine edges. Some off-setting to free endpapers but otherwise clean and bright. In very good condition. 211 pages. LIT/042111. Very Good.
