He wrote at the dawn of the paper industry mechanization, criticizing the papermaking practices of the time. The text is preceded by a substantial introductory essay by Leonard Schlosser, a prominent book collector and leading member of the paper industry. There is also a publisher's note by Henry Morris and a short appendix that details some of Murray's other accomplishments. The prospectus notes that Murray's is a work of remarkable prescience as in modern times conservators and librarians are dealing with crumbling books they strive to preserve.
