The book artist writes: "The book explores ideas central to Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass including transcendentalism, or the inherent goodness of nature, and realism, depicting familiar things as they are. It captures both the complexity and simplicity of nature by juxtaposing dimensional paper grass texture and a quote about nature and wonder. The book is not a reprinting of all of Whitman’s words, but an art object that encapsulates the feeling of Whitman." Her evocative work is done as a box that opens like a traditional book. The inside front cover and back cover are covered with cream paper that includes quotes from Whitman along with his image. Inside of the box/book are several spiky rows of grass leaves crafted from green paper. The box is covered with green paper with the title, author and press name in a lighter shade of green. Michoacán, Mexico: Ioulia Akhmadeeva, 2021. Hardcover. Number 2 of 5 copies. This beautiful work is from Russian born book artist Ioulia Akhmadeeva, who has resided and worked in Mexico since 1994. She is a full professor of the book arts at the university in Morelia, Michoacá. The text of the book is a Spanish poem by González on the transitory nature of life, using the life of a rose as metaphor. The "poetry talks about the ephemeral life of roses. [The author compares a rose to three ages of women with supporting illustrations of roses and portraits of women. The variety of] page formats supports the narrative about the ephemerality of life itself" (Akhmadeeva). The poem is inkjet printed on small floral themed papers that are bound with Ioulia's full page evocative and mysterious engravings. Printed on kozo paper and handmade paper with dried rose petal inclusions. Bound in beige patterned yotsume toji silk covered boards with metal corners. In fine condition. Pages of poetry about the sea are printed on translucent paper that has been cut in various shapes to mirror designs within facing paintings. Many pages have elaborate cut-outs of clouds and starfish to create windows. Stab bound in blue yotsume toji silk over white patterned paper covered boards with black title to the front cover. Philadelphia: Alice Austin, 2019. Number 15 of 20 copies. This tunnel book of the Grand Canal draws attention to the negative effects of tourism on Venice's rising water levels and ecosystem. Created from a series of lino-cuts, each page has been hand-cut and assembled into the tunnel book structure, giving the viewer a periscope-like view of the famed Grand Canal. The artist describes the scene as follows: "a chaotic mix of local fauna, gondolas, traghettos and bridges vying for space on the waterway, contrasting with the ominous visage of a cruise ship lurking on the horizon. The outsized scale of the ship emphasizes the threat these monsters impose on the delicate environment of this unique place — flooding the streets with mass tourism, and literally flooding the small canals with their enormous wakes. The cover panel is in the shape of an eye, reflecting upon the voyeuristic nature of tourism. The first panel shows an egret patiently hunting for fish amidst the chaotic scene. A quatrefoil-laced building facade typical of Venice provides the background. The second panel has a winged cherub and a traghetto (ferry) making its regular crossing of the Grand Canal, as the figures in the gondola stand in the customary Venetian way for the short trip, ready to bound off the second the boat docks. The third panel features the famed Rialto bridge, with a rower guiding a sandolo, the type of small rowboat used by the locals. The fourth panel shows the characteristic vase-shaped chimneys of Venice. The fifth panel is an enormous cruise ship ominously looming over the buildings and canal, impossible to miss. The sixth panel is the back side of the tunnel book - The Lion's Mouth, or bocce dei Leone - depicting letter boxes found that were placed in prominent locations, where citizens could slip a note betraying the names of enemies of the Republic. The side panels show rowers in racing gondolas training for the Regatta Storica." It is printed on Mohawk heavyweight paper and housed in a marbled paper covered clamshell box with magnet closure and paper title label to spine panel. The paper was marbled by the artist. This piece was produced in 3 different versions: the deluxe edition (1-6) is now sold out; the special edition (7-11) is issued in unique wooden boxes with specimens; and the regular edition (12-15) is the book only. In this elaborate work comprised of a hand-printed book, a collection of specimens, and hand-made box, Austin memorializes her walks along the shores of the ocean through poetry and lino-cuts. Her verse describes creatures encountered and beaches traversed. The supporting lino-cut illustrations depict an array of shells, horseshoe crab, and more. Physical specimens of most of the items illustrated are included in the accompanying box. The accordion book is bound in Twin Rocker hand-made grey paper wrappers with black title and blue lino-cut scallop shells to the front panel. It is letterpress printed in Cheltenham Italic type on Somerset paper. Housed in a custom made unique cherry wood box with legs, with a vintage type drawer incorporated. Richmond, VA: Monalisa Bagby, 2022. Hardcover. Number 2 of 4 copies signed and inscribed by the book artist, Monalisa Bagby. The half-mythical king Gilgamesh features in several Sumerian poems but is best known from The Epic of Gilgamesh. Historical evidence for Gilgamesh's existence is found in inscriptions crediting him with the building of the great walls of Uruk (modern-day Warka, Iraq). The quest for the meaning of life, explored by writers and philosophers from antiquity up to the present day, is first fully explored in the Gilgamesh epic as the hero-king leaves the comfort of his city following the death of his best friend, Enkidu, to find the mystical figure Utnapishtim and eternal life. Gilgamesh's fear of death is actually a fear of meaninglessness, and although he fails to win immortality, the quest itself gives his life meaning. The epic has served as the model for any similar tale that has been written since. Bagby was inspired by The Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest piece of epic world literature, but in this inventive and creative version she tells the ancient story with modern twists. She writes at the end of her book that after visiting the epic tale she rewrote and adapted the story to fit her voice. Despite the modern references she made every effort to remain true to its spirit. She describes some her modern references: "for instance, the gods drink coffee, the Bull-of-Heaven is referenced as a vehicle and the celebration of Enkidu and Gilgamesh is described as a State Fair. The artwork also provides modern allusions. In the first pages Gilgamesh appears as a hulking predatory bird peering down at his people. Its purple color represents his royal stature. Later in the story, the goddess Ishtar is shown wearing tights with her hair braided. Gilgamesh’s grief and internal turmoil-his unraveling-is represented by a male figure with a floating head of confusion. It is not a full bodied existence anymore. Even one of his sandals is missing. Each signature of the book includes quotes and parts of or complete poems to support the story. The famed Flood Story is handwritten in brown ink. Screen-printed at the bottom of the page are remembrances from individuals of their experience of the news of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. Their stories are run together to create a stream-of-conscious of collective memories. The stories are printed in small typeface and in brown ink to suggest earth/ground/soil. To represent the impermanence of life the artwork is drawn in pencil. At the end of the story, the last paragraph is hand written in a field of blue representing peace and calm for Gilgamesh. The entire book is screen printed. Watercolor, collage, gold leaf, hand written sections and pencil drawings help carry the story. She chose a simple, muted design of the book cover is a reference to the earnestness of Gilgamesh's journey for meaning and contrasts the colorful rendering of the story. Bound in a Coptic binding in dark blue cloth with title in red on the cover. Printed in various fonts on Rives paper. In fine condition. Measures 8 x 8 inches. 23 pages plus colophon and final notes. Lisa Bagby describes this intricate and mysterious book as "a magical tale of how beauty enters the world and the intertwine of fate and potential." She explores her theme by following the journey of an unnamed good woman who realizes that as she responds to circumstances over which she has no control that she is realizing her potential in ways she could not have imagined. The artist incorporates striking visual and structural designs throughout this book to trace the course of the good woman's journey. They include screen printed patterns of foliage and shapes, the use of colors and various papers to delineate the text, pop-ups and reverse pop-ups, and images from a Lichtenstein print, and a Chagall painting. The backs of the pages of this concertina book are also screen printed using the colors black, orange, and gray. All of the images on the back relate to the story unfolding on the front side. They include the constellation Ursa Major to refer to the mention of a black bear, while an image of a polar bear refers to stories told to the good woman about the North people. Postage stamps of birds pasted in pertain to their cacophony. Printed in Roboto on Rives paper, with insertions of various other fonts. It is bound in grey cloth with maroon floral designs on the front cover, with a black string tie with a maroon and cream button attached. In fine condition. Measures 8.25 x 8.25 x 1 inches. Louisa Baldwin was one of the four MacDonald sisters, all of whom married notable men. Louisa married industrialist Alfred Baldwin and was the mother of prime minister Stanley Baldwin; Alice, the mother of Rudyard Kipling and Alice "Trix" MacDonald Kipling, married the sculptor Lockwood Kipling; Agnes married artist Edward Poynter; and Georgiana married Edward Burne-Jones. The recipient of this book "Trix" Kipling, later Fleming, was Rudyard's sister and Louisa's niece. This is one of many titles of fiction and poetry written by Louisa, many published with Mrs. Alfred Baldwin as the author. Bound in publisher's dark blue cloth with gilt title and author to spine. This is a charming and beautifully produced book by Carolyn LaFrance, a San Diego architect who is affiliated with the gallery at the Bay Park Press. Maxine is Carolyn’s beloved feline friend and companion, and the book describes a day in Maxine’s life through text and illustrations. Maxine begins her story: “Sun’s up, I get to go out. Yes, yes, I know, ‘Be careful,’ the howling creatures may still be about. What, you think I don’t know that? What I need to know is, who has been in my yard? Mr. Smushy-face? Walter? Or that grey and white bruiser? ...” Each page includes a hand-colored intaglio print of Maxine at various moments in her day (11 prints altogether). The text is Bernhard Modern type on lovely Fabriano Rosapina Bianco paper. Oblong folio bound in grey linen with black spine. Paw prints decorate the front cover and endpapers. Their books address a wide range of subjects from the universe to gardening to opera to Yiddish and more. Most are letterpress printed, many have moveable pieces, and all are illustrated. Number 3 of 10 copies. In her colophon, Sibyl Rubottom gives her love and thanks “to the father I never knew who named me Sibyl hoping I would be shrewd in business. That did not occur, but I did end up making books.” This beautiful book is about five ancient Sibyls, including how they were depicted in Western art. These Sibyls are the Cumean, Delphic, Erythraean, Persian, and the Libyan. They offered prophecies, often through the use of leaves, as being from the thoughts of the gods. There is a brief description of each, accompanied by an intaglio leaf print and a reproduction of each Sibyl from the work of Michelangelo (four plates) or Velasquez (one plate). Each Sibyl is presented within a fold-out page with the description on the facing page and the plate and illustration inside the fold. Bound in red cloth with green spine, with title and author on front cover. The book was printed on Dutch etching paper in Bodoni, Bernard Modern, Albertus, and Patatino types. There are eight intaglio prints, each signed by the book artist. Housed in a brown paper covered case lined with the same red cloth as the book covers. She grew up watching her movies trying "to relive the fabulous water ballet sequences." As an adult her love of water continued and she began swimming in La Jolla Cove near her home and later in an olympic sized outdoor pool in Mission Valley. She dedicates this book to La Jolla Cove, one of her regular swimming spots when the water is warm enough. Illustrated with six etchings and three unique oil paintings on mylar. Founded by Sibyl Rubottom and Jim Machacek in 2000, the Bay Park Press produces artists' books, offers classes, and holds book arts' exhibitions. This out-of print book is an exquisite work from Sibyl Rubottom and Jim Machacek. It was inspired by Sibyl’s interest in all things botanical and Jim’s family heritage. The result is what they hoped for - "a riotous colorscape for your senses” - with rich and luminous colors and beautiful illustrations. It includes 14 unbound folded folio sized leaves that are housed in a folding case. Twelve of the leaves are dedicated to different types of gardens, each in a different color, with designs and writings to reflect that garden. The gardens are: Japanese, butterfly, desert, night, orchid, primordial, mystical, rose, water, Eros, secret, and herb. Each features a poem or prose by such writers as John Milton, Rumi, Homer, Lord Byron, Robert Frost, Oscar Wilde, Frances Hodgson Burnett, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. The two other folded leaves are for the title and for the colophon. Printed on Fabriano Rosapina Blanco paper in Venus, Edwardian Script, and Palatino typefaces using letterpress, monoprint, and intaglio techniques. Her artists' books have been collected by many museums and libraries. This scarce work is a meditation on birth and death after the loss of a baby. The contemplative text is accompanied by monochromatic photographs of sky, clouds, water, along with that of a woman giving birth and a solitary unmoving figure. The book can be opened as a codex or fanned out in carousel fashion to see all of the pages at once. Transparent covers reveal the photographic paper boards with title. Riverside, CA: Bo Press Miniature Books, 20102016. Hardcover. Signed by the book artist. This is a story by Prue Batten, an Australian award winning writer of fantasy and historical fiction. In this lovely story-within-a-story by Batten, a medieval troubadour tells his master's young son a legend of Occitan: A queen suspected of sorcery and shape-changing and how she was vindicated. The story is loosely based on the legend of Pedauque that has been part of the Occitan legend for centuries. The tale has ten illustrations with historiated initials drawn from medieval manuscripts. Pat writes that this is the sixth book that she and Prue have published together, and she has marked the event with an illustration opposite the title page with a Latin motto including both our names. The beautiful binding is an embroidered fabric of gold, turquoise, and dark blue, with a twisted ribbon spine that echoes the illustrations inside. In fine condition. "When Duke Albert V of Bavaria commissioned his court painter, Hans Mielich, to make an inventory of the jewels belonging to him and his wife Anna in 1552, he may not have expected the over-the-top manuscript Meilich finally produced two years later. The jewelry wasn't the half of it. The 110 gouche on paper paintings showed the back and front of each piece of jewelry, life-sized, and each was surrounded by a different elaborate frame. The manuscript is a riot of cartouches, strapwork, acanthus, foliage, flowers, grotesques, and caryatids, and yet each jewel shines forth as an individual masterpiece. The book remained in the private ducal and electoral Chamber of Artifacts for almost three centuries—long after the originals of the jewelry depicted had been lost. Only in 1843 was the work presented to the Bavarian State Library by King Ludwig I. I have tried, in my presentation of the Jewel Book, to reproduce in miniature some sense of the outrageous Renaissance ostentation that makes the original such a brilliant and worldly example of wretched excess. My favorite page is the frontispiece of the Duke and Duchess playing chess, as though their real pursuits were intellectual, surrounded by their bored courtiers and a couple of puppies. This miniature copy of the Jewel Book of Anna of Bavaria is limited to ten copies. It is set on OldStyle1 and Palatino Linotype, and printed on Monarch Superfine paper with a Canon Pro-100 inkjet printer. The book is bound in gilded snakeskin with a beaded and embellished front panel of celadon snakeskin. The tri-fold box is bound in a gold on black Indian silkscreened paper with a raised rectangle on the front bound in a textured Japanese metallic gold paper. The interior of the box is lined in a Japanese chiyogami feather print. A small pocket on the front of the box holds a booklet containing information on the Jewel Book and its patrons. She writes: "Rear Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort, (1774-1857) had no notion of poetry when he devised his long-needed standardized scale for the effect of wind on sailing ships, but his descriptions have a beauty and clarity that come close to it: 'Surface smooth and mirror-like. Calm, Smoke rises vertically. Scaly ripples, no foam crests. Smoke drift indicates wind direction, Still wind vanes.' I've paired Beaufort's poetic descriptions with land (and sea-) scape paintings that illustrate his wind levels, with technical details on the back of each fold out page. The twelve fold-outs have tiny tabs to pull out the pages." Printed on Monarch Superfine paper in UnZialish and Tempus Sans fonts, and bound in black watered satin cloth with endpapers of blue and silver Japanese paper.
