San Diego: Bay Park Press, 2010. Hardcover. Number 4 of 10 copies. Book artist Sibyl Rubottom grew up on Long Island Sound where Esther Williams was her hero. She grew up watching her movies trying "to relive the fabulous water ballet sequences." As an adult her love of water continued and she began swimming in La Jolla Cove near her home and later in an olympic sized outdoor pool in Mission Valley. She dedicates this book to La Jolla Cove, one of her regular swimming spots when the water is warm enough. Illustrated with six etchings and three unique oil paintings on mylar. Printed on Fabriano Rosapina Bianco paper using letterpress and intaglio prints, some with chine colle. Set in Bernhard Modern. Oblong folio. Housed in a blue clamshell box. Unpaginated. Fine.
San Diego: Bay Park Press, 2000. Hardcover. Number 40 of 45 copies. This was the premier publication of the Bay Park Press. Its founders, Sibyl Rubottom and Jim Marachacek, have gone on to create many more wonderful books. This work is based on a poem by the 13th century Suni mystic, Rumi. It is constructed from a single sheet of white Fabriano Rosapina paper that has been cut , folded, and printed in shades of blue, light orange, and red. The cover paper is Fox River Confetti. The text is in various sizes of Bodoni and Times Roman. The images were created with polymer plates, monotypes, a linocut, and screen printing. The cover has cleverly cut out a diamond in a pleated page edge, and has printed a brief history of Rumi within the diamond. In fine condition. PRI/073112. Fine.
Riverside, CA: Bo Press Miniature Books, 2020. This fascinating miniature construction from Pat Sweet's Bo Press is what she describes as one of the occasional oddities she creates.While she has made a few of these kits over the years, each is unique in shape and contents. This one includes a collection of miniature books useful for any (tiny) vampire hunter as well a vampire skull (preserved in a glass case), stakes, a mallet, garlic, jar of blood, crucifix, revolver, and more. Size: about 3 x 2 inches. Fine.
Oxford: Francis Macpherson, 1848. Hardcover. First edition. Arthur Clough (1819 - 61), close friend of Matthew Arnold and Ruskin, hosted reading parties on his vacations to Scotland. This poem was composed in response one such vacation and supposedly both delighted and outraged his guests. Very good in original blue cloth flexible boards with gilt title to front cover. Minor wear to edges of covers. There are a few small chip to edges of several pages. The binding is split in a few places; however, all of the pages remain bound in. Born in Wilson, North Carolina, Bruce Cotten (1873 - 1954) was a serious collector of books, art, and ephemera relating to North Carolina. Much of his collection can now be found at the Louis Round Wilson Library of the University of North Carolina library. Bound in original brown cloth with gilt title to spine. Very subtle dampstain to front cover. Offsetting to endpages and a few small spots of foxing to interior, but overall clean and bright. (New York): [printed for author], (1893). Hardcover. FIRST EDITION, SCARCE. A Milestone in the history of American Literature. Crane's first novel. One of only about 35 known copies. Crane had 1,100 copies printed but only two were sold through Bretano's. Bound in paper wrappers, which have been expertly restored. The original front wrapper has been backed and the missing areas have been filled in. The spine and rear wrapper are modern, but have colored to match the original front wrapper. The edges of the first few pages are chipped and several corners are clipped. There are a few spots of foxing to the interior, but otherwise it remains very clean. Housed in a modern clamshell box with rounded leather spine titled in gilt. 163 pages. LIT/030614. Very Good.
Augsburg, Germany: Erhard Ratdolt, 1488. An Incunabula Leaf from the Hungarian Chronicle of Johannes de Thurocz, which was the most extensive Hungarian work of this kind dating from the 15th century. The Chronicle was probably made on the impulse of dignitaries who were working in the Royal court of King Matthias Corvinus. Johannes de Thurocz, a member of Turiec a yeoman family, produced it while working from 1475 as a general notary of a regional judge. Erhard Ratdolt in Ausgburg, Germany printed it on June 3, 1488 for Theobald Feger. There are 8 lines of gothic text in Latin printed single column on paper as well as a 130 x 111 mm woodblock print of the coronation of King Besya. The verso contains 38 lines of the same text with no woodblock print. Beautifully custom framed. #17511. Fine.
Paris: Durand et Cie, 1913. Andre Helle. Boards. A charming and scarce copy of Debussy's ballet score (piano reduction only) for “La Boite a Joujoux,” with delightful color pochoir illustrations by Andre Helle. The ballet was inspired by Debussy's daughter and her toys and toy box. This was one of Debussy's final works, and the ballet was in fact not staged until after his death, with costumes and decor by Helle. Published in hardbound and softbound editions, this copy has been recased in tan paper-covered boards with a digital reproduction of Helle's illustrated title affixed to front cover. Volumes 2 - 6 were also printed in Dublin for Hallhead and are dated 1781. Volumes 7 - 10 were printed in Dublin for Luke White in 1788. Lacks volumes 11 and 12. Volume 2 has folding map. Bookplate of Charles Chauncey to front pastedown of each volume. Bound in full leather with title and volume labels to spines; however, one volume lacks volume label. Volumes 1- 6 have matching full calf bindings and volumes 7 - 10 are bound in matching mottled calf bindings. This set may require an extra shipping fee. Very Good.
Hingham, MA: Maryanne Grebenstein, 2012. Hardcover. Number 3 of 20 copies. One unique hand lettered copy was also issued. This is a small prayer book containing The Lord’s Prayer in Latin, Middle English (John Wycliffe version), and the Revised Standard Version. In this limited edition the black text is printed and the decorations are hand colored with the illuminations in gold or silver pen. Each book is hand bound and colored differently, so that the 20 copies all have a completely different look. This copy is bound in lavender leather with an inlaid cross to both covers and title in gold. Binding by Samuel Feinstein. 3 x 3 inches. Fine.
2014. A beautiful calligraphic manuscript of William Morris’s poem “Love Fulfilled.” Maryanne Grebenstein is a professional calligrapher who studied under many other notable calligraphers. She teaches calligraphy and manuscript gilding at the Massachusetts College of Art (Boston), the North Bennet Street School (Boston), and the Abbey Studio in Hingham, MA. This lovely lyric was published in Morris’s last book of poetry, Poems by the Way, in 1892. A contemporary critic described this late work as still marked by a pervading intensity of human feeling found in his early poetry. The title and decorated capitals are 23 Karat gold leaf. Thirty-five lines with the calligrapher’s signature in pencil below the border. The text is in Moon Palace sumi ink and the color is in Winsor & Newton gouache on Crane’s 100% cotton stock paper. Archivally matted. Measures 17 x 22 inches including mat. Fine.
Boston: Oliver Ditson, 1861. Paperback. This is an early edition of the Star Spangled Banner, part of a collection of national songs, the others being Hail Columbia, Yankee Doodle, America, and the Marseilles Hymn. The cover sheet has a lithograph illustration of the crossed flags of the United States and France. In 1861, because of his indignation over the Civil War, a fifth verse was written by Oliver Wendell Holmes. In it he writes of a foe from within that strikes a blow at her glory and down with the traitor that dares to defile the flag. The song did not become America's "Official Song" until 1889, but it was not officially adopted as the nation's anthem until 1931. In good only condition. The pages are separated, tattered at the edges, and has light water stains not affecting the readability. Still a nice copy of this scarce item. MUS/081811. Good.

"Clothed in Bark's unconventional words and images connect the reader with the issues of forests, globalization and climate that haunt our world today" (Carter Roberts, President and CEO World Wildlife Fund). Sallie Lowenstein has transformed her photographs of tree bark by drawing on top of each image to accentuate the lines and patterns formed by nature. Her images are paired with an essay on climate change by her brother, former head of the Nature Conservancy's North America Conservation Region's Forest Health Program. Each copy is in a unique binding. Bound by hand in flexible dark brown leather wrappers decorated with an intricate pattern of circular punches. Sewn with a medieval long stitch, which is then woven in a pattern resembling tree bark. Housed in a cardboard box with velcro closures and plastic bag insert, which holds the book in place inside of the box. Images from the book decorate the exterior of the box. Unpaginated. London: Burns & Oates, 1919. Hardcover. Scarce first edition of an anthology of verse by Lucas. 12mo. Bound in brown linen with title, author and ornament in gilt to front cover. Slight bumping and fading but very good. Interior pages also very good, with gift inscription on ffep and an annotation in red ink on page 17 noting that a line of verse could be a motto for a sundial. 34 pages plus 4 pages of praise of the writings of Lucas and Alice Meynell. Accompanied by five short ALs from Lucas. Four were written between June - December1904 to Mr. Shorter asking for information and also inquiring about the possibility of submitting verse to "The Sphere." This would be Clement Shorter, the journalist and author who founded "The Sphere" and later "The Tatler." The fifth was to a friend in 1922 to congratulate her on the birth of her baby. These books do not appear to have been originally issued as set as they were printed by different publishers (2 John Lane and 2 Macmillian) in different years. The bindings may be later, possibly from the 1910s or 20s. Full dark brown morocco with gilt titles and author to spines. Each spine has six compartments with gilt rules and raised bands. Marbled endpages and top edges gilt. Minor wear to hinges, edges, and corners of boards. Clean interiors overall; although there is light foxing to a few pages. A curious book, it was one of two legitimate novels published by Charles Hirsch, a London bookseller and publisher known for distributing clandestine works. William Platt was a peculiar 1890s writer whose works concerned the role of the sexes and often leaned toward the risque. In keeping with this, the cover has an illustration in gilt of a nude woman reading a book. In original green cloth, somewhat rubbed and bumped. Interior pages have browning to margins, offsetting to free endpapers with chip to rear free endpaper. Still a nice copy in very good condition. 222 pages plus ad for music by William Platt and 16 pages of reviews of Platt's Men, Women, and Chance. LIT/032513. Very Good.

Orchids Illustrated & Described. Reichenbachia, a native of Ghent and founder of Messes Sanders of St. Albans, a large nursery firm, intended in this work to illustrate all classes of orchids, drawn life sized and “colored by lithography, or hand painted when found expedient.” He employed as many as 20 orchid collectors in the field, in diverse locations such as Brazil, Columbia, Peru, Ecuador, New Guinea, India, Burma and Madagascar. For the illustration of the work he engaged the services of Henry Moon (1857 – 1905). Unlike many illustrators of the day, Moon believed in representing the flower as found in nature, rather than intensifying the colors, or dramatizing the blooms. n.p. . A lovely lithograph printed in green ink by Charles Hazelwood Shannon. It is an image of three bending nude female figures and appeared in #2 of "The Dial." Shannon and Ricketts were artistic and personal partners for more than fifty years. They designed and illustrated books, founded "The Dial" magazine and Vale Press, and were key figures in the London cultural world. The 4 x 5.5 inch print is on a sheet of 11 x 14 inch paper. There are a few small creases and light brown spots along the paper margins, not affecting the illustration. Said to be from the collections of T. Sturge Moore and his daughter Henrietta but there is no evidence of provenance. Very good condition. ORIG/092413. Very Good.

It features a classic black and white illustration by Charles Dana Gibson of one of his Gibson Girls being escorted by an older gentleman. Noted Christmas Features listed include : A Christmas Poem illustrated in colors by Walter Appleton Clark; Two Christmas stories; C.D. Gibson's "The Seven Ages of the American Woman" a Series of Drawings; Augustine Birrell on John Wesley; and other illustrations by H.C. Christy and Maxfield Parrish. John Henry Shorthouse (1834-1903) was an English novelist probably most famous for his book John Inglesant. The recipient was also an author. With the bookplate of Ohio book collector Paul Lemperly, with Lemperly's inscription stating that he received the book as a gift from Morris L. Parris, whose collection of Victorian novels is now at Princeton. Parrish's letter of presentation is inserted. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1872. Hardcover. Second English Edition. AN EXCEPTIONAL ASSOCIATION COPY. Inscribed at the time of publication on a slip of paper affixed to front pastedown, "To my dear friend John H. Goodenow Esq U.S. Consul to Constantinople from Henry M. Stanley The Author London Nov 5 1872." Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), the explorer and journalist, was commissioned by his employer, the New York Herald to mount an expedition to Africa to find the missing Scottish missionary David Livingstone. Stanley found Livingstone in November 1871, where he famously said (or perhaps not),"Dr. Livingstone, I presume." The trip brought Stanley fame and fortune. His first account of the expedition was published in July 1872. The recipient, John Goodenow (1833-1906) was from a prominent legal and political family in Maine. In 1864 he was appointed as consul general in Constantinople and became secretary of the legation in Turkey in 1873. It was in his capacity as a senior diplomat in the Ottoman Empire that brought him in contact with Stanley. Stanley, traveling with two other men, made plans to travel through Turkey to Asia and China. Two weeks into their journey they found themselves embroiled in a violent encounter with local Turks. Stanley was eventually able to obtain the assistance of Goodenow, who secured compensation for their treatment. Bound in original brown cloth with embossed design on spine and front cover, with gilt illustration of two men meeting with the caption "D,. Livingstone I presume." Boards are chipped, bumped and spine has chip to top left edge. Rear cover watermarked, but binding is nicer than it sounds. Hinges are weak but text block is tight. The end papers are chipped and the rear hinge has pulled open, and the front folding map is detached from text block except for part that is still attached but torn away from the rest of the map.Later ownership signature on half-title. Frontispiece is a mounted photograph of Stanley. Full and partial page illustrations throughout. Four folding maps. London: Chatto & Windus, 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed Presentation Copy. 8vo. In original dark blue cloth. An extraordinary association copy, inscribed "Mary C. J. Leith from her affectionate cousin A.C. Swinburne Nov. 8, 1894." Mary Gordon, later Mrs. Leith, was Swinburne's first cousin and by far the most important woman in his life apart from his mother. Herself a poet and novelist, Mary Gordon's intimacy began in childhood when they lived in neighboring houses on the Isle of Wight. Later their relationship became literary, Swinburne providing the poems that appear in Gordon's anonymously issued "The Children of the Chapel" in 1864, and Gordon appearing as Clara in Swinburne's own novel, "A Year's Letters," first serialized in The Tatler in 1877. It was published in book form in 1905 as "Love's Cross-Currents." In her memoir, Gordon wrote that Swinburne [was] to me as an elder brother, a loved and sympathetic playmate, and in later years a loyal and affectionate friend. Although there is no direct evidence, recent scholarship has identified Gordon as most likely Swinburne's sole romantic attachment, which ended in traumatic rejection. This book was probably inscribed after Gordon visited Swinburne and Watts-Dunton at The Pines in the fall of 1894. In 1899, Swinburne dedicated his last major poetic work, "Rosamund, Queen of the Lombards," to Mrs. Disney Leither. Swinburne is better known for his lyric poetry, but he was also a prolific and well regarded literary critic. The collection of some of his critical writings include essays on Sir Walter Scott, Wilkie Collins, Beaumont and Fletcher, Whitman, and more. (London): Sadie Coles HQ, (1997). Paperback. Number 29 of 50 copies. Signed by both authors on title page in pencil. A collection of fifty love poems by English artists Thomson (1966) and Lowe (1967), who are known best for their humorous and sometimes offensive installations pieces. Their work often involves recreating elements from historical artworks by using everyday objects such as cigarettes or whiskey bottles to make statements about popular English culture. Fitting with their visual art, these poems are terse, crude, and very funny. They poke fun at the seriousness of the love poetry genre with verses like: "Tonight I want you more, than any other, it's crazy I know, after you left me for, me brother." The poems are printed in black ink on fine paper and are housed in a black paper covered box titled in silver on the front panel. Unpaginated. [51 pages.] ARTB/081914. Fine.
