The words “Star Spell” are written largely in resist and have been watercolored over to reveal the words across the twilight sky background. The familiar rhyme reads: “Star light / star bright / first star / I see tonight / I wish I may / I wish I might / have the wish / I wish tonight.” Fine in grey paper wrappers with white hand lettered title to spine and silver star to front panel. The interior is bound accordion style and is hand painted and lettered in white on Zerkall Book paper. This is a charming book by well known calligrapher, Cari Ferraro. New York: John Lane Company, 1916. Hardcover. 1 of 100 copies printed and type distributed. Albert Eugene Gallatin (1881-1952) was a wealthy art historian and collector of modern art. Early in his life he was attracted to the aestethic art of Whistler, Beardsley, and Beerbohm, but he soon became a collector of contemporary art and helped to found the first museum of modern art in New York City. This essay was based on one he wrote for the The Print Collector's Quarterly. In it he describes six portraits of Whistler that were hitherto unpublished. Five were from his own collection. Number 8 of 20 copies. “Chicago binder, book and installation artist Karen Hanmer’s intimate, playful works fragment and layer text and image to intertwine memory, cultural history, and the history of science. Her work weds the ancient act of book binding with the high tech use of the computer to aid her process. The intimate scale and the gestures of exploration required to travel through each piece evoke the experience of looking through an album, a diary, or the belongings of a loved one. However, her works often take the forms of games or puzzles, and many include witty text” (Karen Hanmer). This work is a history of an immigrant farming family told through photographs. The family is depicted on both inside covers with one picture dating from the 1920s and the other from the 1960s. Connecting the pictures is a flowing field of corn, which is blurred on one side and detailed on the other. As you open the book the interlocking pages and imagery create a flowing movement that simulates the passage of time. The result is an engaging book that tells a story despite the lack of text. Harte's satirical poem is illustrated in exuberant fashion by Phil Little. In an introduction, Ina Coolbrith details the context and effects of Harte's satire in which he sought but failed to combat perceptions that he was racially prejudiced. This folio volume was designed by John Henry Nash in Asian fashion with string binding over blue paper boards, and a paper title label of mock Chinese calligraphy. Housed in orange slipcase with slight soiling and wear to spine and edges. Unpaginated. Very Good.

Volume I of this set reproduces the landmark 1934 work by Carter and Pollard in which they outline the detailed and laborious process by which they determined that the illustrious bibliophile Thomas J. Wise had actually produced a large number of forgeries of the writings of many major Victorian writers. The sequel describes their continuing efforts over the next many years to expand their disclosure of Wise's forgeries. This examination revealed that another noted bookman, H. Buxton Forman, was also involved in producing the fraudulent works. Both volumes are fascinating and elegantly written. Volumes I and II are bound in full black morocco with gilt titles to spines. the 3rd volume is a portfolio that holds two pamphlets and is bound in quarter black morocco with grey paper boards and gilt title to spine. All volumes are housed in a black cloth slipcase. The two pamphlets are an original copy of "Two Poems" by Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning (Chapman & Hall, 1854) and "A Note on Two Poems" by Nicolas Barker (Scolar Press, 1983). The "Note on Two Poems" is printed in an edition limited to 80 copies, of which this is number 64. "An Inquiry into the Nature..." is the second edition while the other volume is the first edition.Volume I: 400 pages plus 31 pages of corrections and notes: Volume II: 394 pages.
