London: Ingram, Cooke, and Co., 1852. Hardcover. First edition. Translated from the German. Ida Pfeiffer (1797-1858) was an Austrian explorer, travel writer, and ethnographer. She was one of the first female travelers, whose best selling journals were translated into seven languages. She journeyed an estimated 32,000 kilometers by land and 240,000 kilometers by sea through Southeast Asia, the Americas, Middle East, and Africa, including two trips around the world from 1846 to 1855. In this work Pfeiffer describes a country about which she says so little is known. The book includes numerous explanatory notes, an essay on Icelandic poetry, a translation of the Icelandic poem The Voluspa, and a brief sketch of Icelandic history. Bound in three quarter green leather with green and blue marbled boards and endpapers. Spine is faded and light bumping to corners. Interior pages are clean and bright save for light aging to page margins. With eight handsome tinted engravings. Very good condition. Small octavo. 354 pages. Very Good.
