Volume I discusses Egyptian, Assyrian, and Greek pottery; volume II covers Greek, Etruscan, and Roman pottery. It also includes a concise account of that of the Celtic and Teutonic nations. Simon Birch (1813-1885) was a highly regarded Egyptologist at the British Museum. This history of pottery is considered one of his principal written works. Bound in three quarter brown leather with gilt decoration and titling to spine. Leather is worn and bumped. Marbled paper covers, page edges, and endpapers. Interior pages are clean and bright, with light foxing to endpapers. With two chromolithograph frontispieces and ten color plates between the two volumes. Very good condition. Quarto.
