1715. Hardcover. Third edition of this magnificent book that, despite its title, describes the building of St. Peter's Basilica, based on the plans of Michelangelo, illustrated by gorgeous and detailed plates of his plans for the interior and exterior. The first edition appeared in 1696. This edition has seven additional plates. The author, Filippo Bonanni (1638-1723) was an important Jesuit scholar. His many works included treatises on fields ranging from anatomy to music. He created the earliest practical illustrated guide for shell collectors in 1681, for which he is considered a founder of conchology. He also published a study of lacquer that has been of lasting value since his death. This book comprises 36 chapters with 92 plates. The plates are numbered 1-86; however, two plates have multiples with the same number and there are actually 92 total plates. The plates are stunning. Many were engraved by the famed Hieronymus Frezza, Arnoldo Van Westerhout, or Alexander Specchi. There are illustrations of architectural renderings, statuary, sepulchres, doorways, the Vatican Palace, and much more. Bound in contemporary vellum with red leather spine label. The vellum is soiled, stained and bumped, and the spine label is chipped. As is typical with vellum, the front board curls out. The title page is lightly foxed, as are a few text pages, but the rest of the interior pages and plates are in very good to near fine condition. Notable is that none of the several fold-out plates has any damage as is often the case with fold-out illustrations and maps. A treasure of a book. Folio measuring 14.5 x 9.25 inches. 218 pages plus plates. ARCH/011621. Very Good. More
