Paris: Librairie Hachette, 1877. Hardcover. Very good in three quarter leather with gilt lettering and raised bands on spine and marbled paper covered boards. Top edge of pages in gilt. Wear along outer hinges and the front hinge is a bit tender. A few scuff marks to boards, and some crackling of the spine leather. Sporadic foxing. Front endpage is present but detached. Thin black marking to title page. 234 maps in text with 10 in color, nine of which are double-page maps. Geography. GEO1/10260. Very Good.
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1890. Hardcover. Author Elisee Reclus (1830 - 1905) was a French geographer and anarchist who was banished from France due to his politcal viewpoints. Despite being banished, he won a gold medal from the Paris Geological Society for his work. Illustrated with numerous engravings and maps. Volume I: the Earth and Volume II: the Oceans. Bound in three quarter dark green leather over green cloth covered boards with gilt titles and volume numbers to spines. Minor wear and rubbing to hinges, edges, and corners of both volumes. Sunning to spines and to front board of second volume. Interiors are clean overall; however, there are black finger smudge marks to the margins of many pages including plates. Some finger smudges affect the images. Stamps to endpapers of both volumes "private library, Walter R. Black, Tarentum, PA." Marbled endpapers and full marbled edges. This set may require an extra shipping fee due to weight. Size: Quartos. Volume I: 500 pages; Volume II: 509 pages. GEO/112122. Very Good.
