Venetiis [Venice]: antonii Tiuani, 1714. Hardcover. Quintus Curtius Rufus was a Roman historian who likely lived during the 1st century. His only known work is the history of Alexander the Great, and it does not survive in its entirety. Originally written in 10 books or chapters, several books are missing and others are incomplete. This book contains Book 10 only, which is incomplete. In Latin. Bound in the original light blue / grey paper covered boards with hand-written author to spine. Wear to corners and edges of boards. Heavy rubbing to boards. Split to front joint leaving internal sewing structure exposed. Soiling from old tape repair to boards and spine; however, tape has been removed. Occasional spots of soiling to interior, previous owner signature, and ink sketches to endpapers - else clean. 428 pages plus index. GRE/081523. Good.

Paris: Horizons de France, (1955). Paperback. 8vo. Very good in white and blue illustrated stiff paper wrappers with pink and black title to front wrapper and black title to white spine. Minor rubbing and creasing to dust jacket as well as light soiling and scuffing. One small open tear to top edge and one small open tear to bottom edge of front wrapper. Interior is clean and bright with beautiful black and white photographic illustrations throughout. 162 pages. Greek History GRE/012518. Very Good / Very Good.
Santa Cruz: Foolscap Press, 2002. One of 200 copies. This is an unusual and lovely scroll book, which, according to the Press, follows the written record of a wondrous monument standing in Athens. The Tower has been explained by scholars from antiquity to the present, yet the Tower of the Winds was and still is a mystery to those who study it. The work is original to the Foolscap Press both in content and exterior form, and was created as a biblio-artifact, both a book and an object. The book is in a pre-codex form, allowing the reader to scroll through history viewing the subject along a panorama 25 feet in length. In addition to reproducing historic texts, there are illustrations of the Tower by James Stuart and Nicolas Revett, two important early British architects. The work is printed in Adobe Herculanum type on Zerkall Book and hand made papyrus from Egypt. It is housed in a formed sculptural / architectural case. Each case is a rigid cylinder hinged with cloth and lined with a map of ancient Athens. Issued with handling instructions. It is a stunning and inventive work from this press. From the press website: "John Sutcliffe's The Colours of Rome, which we published in October 2013, was a great success and sold out quickly. So we were delighted to have the opportunity of working on another book by him on a similar colour-based theme. In his capacity as a decorative artist, John has done a great deal of work in the Cyclades. One of the outcomes of this has been a growing fascination with what happened to colour on the buildings of Greece and the islands in particular. Why are so many buildings today white? Has that always been the fashion there? White is what we tourists expect, but is that white authentic for the Cycladic islands in particular? John has researched the answers to these questions, visiting the islands and examining the walls of older buildings, looking for traces of the ‘lost colours’ and their history. Like The Colours of Rome, this new title has colour at its core. An enthusiastic cook, he has also taken the opportunity to sample – and weave into his researches – the cuisine of the Greek islands. Basileae [Basel]: 1574. Hardcover. A compilation in Greek of the writings of Plutarch, including his Moralia but various other philosophical and historical writings as well. The Greek text is preceded by a several page letter of dedication in Latin, along with a frontispiece portrait of the Roman general Scipio. Bound in dark brown leather with gilt rulings to covers and gilt decorations to the spine compartments along with a spine label "Plutarchi Opera." Binding is chipped, bumped and worn with weakened joints. There was an attempt to reinforce or repair the joints with newer leather but it was not done well. The hinges are cracked but the text block is holding firm. Marbled endpapers, with front free endpaper detached. Text pages are browned and have occasional spots throughout. A few words and lines have been underlined. Pages 413-417 have a square brown spot possibly an offset from a piece of paper. Despite condition, this is an interesting work first published almost 450 years ago. Measures 8 x 12 inches. 679 pages plus index in both Greek and Latin. PHIL/011823. Very Good -.
London: Henry Colburn, 1837. Scarce. In his preface, the author states that there have been so many books about Egypt, but that his intent is to describe Egypt as it is, not as it was. Candia refers to the Venetian name for Crete at that time. During his military career Scott traveled in Crete and Syria. The two volumes are bound in nineteenth century three quarter black leather with marbled paper covers and endpapers. Leather is bumped and lightly rubbed. Marbled covers are scuffed. Text pages have browning and aging throughout but are quite legible. Volume I has frontis and two plates; Volume II has frontis, one plate, and fold-out map with the plan for Karnak. Very good.
