Pasadena, CA: Deeply Game Productions, 2012. Hardcover. Number 1 of 7 copies. Signed and numbered by the book artist. Sara Press is a photographer, printer, and book artist whose work addresses science, nature, and the intricacies of our culture. This is a suite of four etchings by Ms. Press that depict contemporary mixed-martial-arts fighters. The accompanying text has been appropriated from a panther / bear fight advertising poster from the 1850s. The text describing animal fights is juxtaposed with the prints of human fighters to make an important statement on violence. The typeface is designed by Dan Mayer. Letterpress printed on a Vandercook No. 3 Proof Press. The loose prints and text pages are housed in a solid maple box with title burnt into the lid. This book was made in California and East Coast humidity has caused the box lid to warp a little along the edges. Unpaginated. ARTISTSBOOKS/030613. Near Fine.

Baltimore: Press of King Brothers, 1905. Hardcover. Scarce original copy of this fencing manual by legendary fencing master Pavese, who was a holder of the Championship Belt. Generoso Pavese (1865 - 1947) was born in Italy where he devoted himself to the study of fencing and took part in all of the principal European fencing tournaments. He came to the United States in 1893 on the occasion of the Chicago Exposition and remained in the country. He was unbeaten in all of his fencing matches and later became a fencing instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy and Loyola University. This copy appears to have been owned by Professor John Sanford, Champion of the Southwest, who participated in many fencing exhibitions with Pavese in the 1920s-30s. There are handwritten pencil notes on the free endpapers about various matches including the date, location, number of rounds, etc. There are newspaper clippings tipped in and inserted about several exhibitions, as well as the newspaper notice of Pavese's death in 1947 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. There are also three photographs, presumably of Sanford, affixed to front and rear pages of book. Bound in dark green cloth with author and title in gilt to spine and front cover. Light bumping to corners but very nice. Interior is also very good, with some wrinkling to the endpapers that have photos or clippings glued on, and some offsetting from newspaper clippings. A unique item in very good condition. 141 pages including index. SPORT/121015. Very Good.
