London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, and J. Ridgway, 1816. Hardcover. A collection of over 200 speeches by Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797), an Irish statesman who served in the House of Commons of Parliament for many years. The speeches in this collection address a wide array of topics including the French Revolution, the economy, East India company affairs, exchanging prisoners with America, the American Revolution, Irish trade bills, American Loyalists, the King's illness, abolition of the slave trade, impeachment of Mr. Hastings, and more. Published nearly 20 years after his death, most of the speeches were given between 1767 and 1794. "Delivered as these speeches were, upon great and comprehensive questions, and containing Mr. Burke's opinions upon a variety of subjects that come home 'to the business and bosoms of men,' it is confidently hoped that they will, in their present collected form, be alike conductive to the reputation of the orator and the best interests of society" (introduction). All four volumes are bound in matching three quarter tan leather over marbled paper covered boards with title and volume labels to spines. All have been rebacked and restored using the original spine leather. Despite the restoration, the spine leather is heavily cracked, chipped, browned, and worn; however, the bindings remain tight and secure. One of the four title labels is modern. The interiors are clean overall with occasional spots of foxing. Bookplate of William Robert Bevan to front pastedowns of each volume. Volume I: 457 pages; Volume II: 494 pages; Volume III: 544 pages; Volume IV: 511 pages. ENG/040820. Very Good. More
