Newcastle, England: J.G. Foster, 1860. Hardcover. Scarce. Thomas Bell (1785-1860) was a prominent land valuer and surveyor who also served as a commissioner and arbitrator for lands in districts of northern England. He is best remembered, however, as an extraordinary book collector, "bringing together one of the largest and most valuable collections of books, papers, and engravings ever formed in the North of England particularly in matters of local interest"(from obituary reprinted in catalogue). The auction sale lasted fifteen days. On the front free endpaper, there is an interesting later handwritten transcript of notes originally written by John Gray Bell, son of Thomas, about his father's library. He described a good-sized library that was shelved round with filled bookcases buried by other bookcases, also filled and then buried as well. The door of the room would only open slightly ajar and one had to sidle in one at a time along a narrow round pathway. A woman wearing a crinoline could not enter at all. The catalog was published in paper wrappers. This copy has been rebound with covers in blue cloth with a black and gilt spine label. Original wrappers bound in. Some bumping and fading. Browning to wrapper cover and browning to to untrimmed edges and to some page margins, not affecting text. Very good condition. 276 pages. BOB/042415. Very Good. More

Dodsley, 1787 These are later editions of the first five volumes of Edmond Burke's ambitious publication that ran from 1759-1824, designed as a summary of chief events of each year. It was called "the most valuable record and chronicle of historical and political events for over a hundred years" [Sabin]. Most notable in these volumes are the lengthy contemporaneous accounts of the Seven Years War (1756-1763). Each year had standard sections, such as the war events, State papers, Chronicles and Book Reviews. But each year had sections that were relevant to that year but not necessarily others, such as "Remarkable Characters," or "Extraordinary Adventures." The Adventures section in the 1758 volume has an indeed extraordinary first person account of an Englishman imprisoned in the heinous Black Hole of Calcutta. Another highlight is the 1762 volume, which has detailed and fascinating descriptions of the coronation of King George III and of his marriage to Princess then Queen Charlotte, complete with order of procession, attendees and attendants, attire of the King and Queen, banquet menus, and more. The volumes are bound uniformly in brown three quarter leather with brown and black marbled paper boards. Marbled paper edges. The volumes are in very good condition, with some bumping and chipping to some of leather, and scuffing to the marbled paper boards of volumes 4 and 5. Interiors are also in very good condition. London: Printed by T.H. for Richard Chiswell, J. Churchill, 1679, 1683, 1715. Hardcover. Written by Scottish philosopher and historian Gilbert Burnet (1643 - 1715), this was considered to be the standard reference on this subject for over a century. The Parliament of England voted to formally thank Burnet after he published the first volume and he was later awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity from Oxford University. Three volumes bound in full black morocco with gilt decoration, raised bands, and title labels reading "Burnet's Historical Works" to spines. Gilt emblems reading "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (a French saying that translates to: "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it") to front and rear boards of all volumes. This was the motto of the Order of the Garter, which Burnet became the Chancellor of in 1689. He served as the Bishop of Salisbury for the order from 1689 to 1715. Gilt rules to boards and dentelles. Full gilt edges to all volumes. Long cracks to front and rear boards of first volume, but boards remain attached. Chipping and wear to spine ends, edges, hinges, spine bands, and corners of all volumes. Minor rubbing to boards and to gilt emblems. William Pochin (1731 - 1798) was a member of the English Parliament and held the office of sheriff of Leichester from 1756-7. Interiors are clean overall with occasional smudge marks and spots of soiling. Volume I: Progress Made in it during the Reign of K.
