Baltimore: Cushings & Bailey, 1870. Hardcover. A comprehensive compilation of the English statutes still entirely or partially in force in Maryland at that time. The editor, Julian Alexander, mildly congratulates himself in the preface for providing the original texts of relevant statutes in an accessible and convenient form. In addition to the text of statutes, there are a list of the statutes, names of cases cited, and an index to principal matters. The book was previously owned by Baltimore attorney William C. Holland. His ownership signature dated 3/22/41 is written in ink on the title page and he has stamped his name on each of the edges and the spine. Either he or another owner of the book wrote a list of the sections and citations to two cases on the front pastedown. There are also occasional light pencil underlining and margin notes. Despite these markings the text pages are in very good condition, with light aging to pages and a few closed tears on few pages of the principal matters index. Bound in tan cloth with red title and black author labels to spine. Binding is rubbed and lightly soiled but still nice. 847 pages. LAW/071217. Very Good.
The Automobile Club of Maryland, 1923-4. Paperback. Includes February 1923, March 1923, April 1923, August 1923, and March 1924. An interesting view into automotive history in Maryland. Issues include updates on new traffic laws, taxes, safety, traffic complaints (such as hogging the road), club meetings, road trips, list of officers and staff, list of service stations, and short stories related to cars. Ex-library from the Maryland Historical Society with their stamp to the front of each issue. Side-stapled paper wrappers with black titles and photographic illustration to each cover. Some covers are present but either loose or detached. Some pages are chipped, browned, and stained; however, text remains bright and legible. Issues are 8 pages each. MD/090215. Very Good.
Baltimore: The John Work Garrett Library, 1949. Hardcover. 1 of 300 copies printed by The Anthoensen Press. This important bibliography of Maryland imprints up to and including 1700 was compiled by Elizabeth Baer, the Librarian of The John Work Garrett Library. It was based on a checklist compiled by John Work Garrett, who donated his book collections, including important Americana, to The Johns Hopkins University. There are 209 items described in the bibliography, and there are facsimiles of their title pages following the text. The bibliographic records are meticulous and detailed. Following the collation, there is a history of the book, references to other bibliographies, and the location of copies in libraries in the US and UK. Bound in dark blue cloth, with gilt design to cover and author and title to spine, with very light scuffing to covers. t.e.g. Interior pages clean and bright, with bookplate of John Riggs dated June 1949 affixed to front pastedown.
