This is an unusual and scarce collection of 16 card strips with photographs from "The Adventures of Smilin' Jack. Samuel Eppy, Inc. issued this 128-card set in 1943. "The Adventures of Smilin’ Jack” was a movie serial based on the comic strip “The Adventures of Smilin’ Jack”. The movie serial was distributed by Universal Pictures during 1943, Both single cards and sixteen 8-cards strips were issued. This set is from the sixteen 8-card strips. The fronts of the 1943 cards feature both black and white artwork and photographs. Each card front features a drawing or photograph depicting a scene from this movie serial. The images are in fact rather dull, but they do depict a chronological story line of this matinee “cliffhanger” movie serial. There are no captions or card numbers on the fronts of the 128 cards. The backs of the cards are divided into the five vertical segments:

Segment one: Card number: Located in the upper left hand corner.
Card title: “THE ADVENTURES OF / SMILING’ JACK ”. 2-lines centered on top of the card.

Segment two: Descriptive text: In English, located directly beneath the title. Descriptive text is a card to card sequential story line from the movie.

This is one of several scrapbooks that was compiled over the past several years by a fervent Eleanor Powell fan. This scrapbook still appears brand new, with its glassine cover with a sticker stating it is a washable fabric cover, and a manufacturer's description of the scrapbook as a memory book measuring 12 x 15 inches, with 20 acid free loading pages. The photos appeared in Picturegoer, Film Weekly, a souvenir program for George White's Scandals, an unidentified list of latest song hits, and Radio Guide. In very good condition. FILM/071825. Portland, ME (?): n.p., [1938]. Softcover. This is an astonishing and unique item created by a young girl who obviously idolized famed child star Shirley Temple. This is an opportunity to acquire an unusual and highly collectible homage to the most popular movie star of the 1930s. The creator of this scrapbook, Lillian Lesperance, later Lesperance-Lysengen, modified a huge catalog of wallpaper samples to affix and display her collection of photographs of Shirley, from infancy to 1938, when she was ten years old. Lillian hand-lettered the cover of the catalog, "1938 Shirley Temple Scrap Book." (The only information available about Lillian was a mention of her in his obituary as the wife of Allen Tilford Lysengen, who married Lillian in 1947 and who died in in 1992.). There are probably one thousand individual images of Shirley. They appear to have been primarily taken from newspapers and magazines and are both in color and black and white, with the majority in black and white. The items range from small head shots framing the other pictures on a page to some that almost fill a page. Rather amazingly, there appear to be very few duplicates of the photos included. A few photographs are amateurishly hand-colored. At the end of the scrapbook, after a few blank pages, the compiler of the scrapbook created several pages with pictures of Shirley as a teenager, at her first marriage at the age of seventeen, and an article about Shirley's appointment as the US Ambassador to Ghana in 1974. Laid in the pages is a doll's blue polka dot cape and hat set, and two programs from the Ritz Theatre in Lewiston with the schedule of films being shown from March 17-April 27. Each showing was a double feature, and many included Mickey Mouse, Our Gang, or other short features. The back of the programs have a full color photo of Shirley with her facsimile signature and dated 1938. This fascinating and enormous scrapbook is generally in very good condition. Two striking original photographs taken during the filming of Hans Richter's "8 x 8". One of the two photographs is signed in red ink by Philippe Halsman, the photographer of both. A note on the back of the signed photo notes that Halsman signed this picture and that the film's cinematographer Arnold Eagle is visible in the background. The photos are mounted on discolored pieces of cardboard. In his original script for the film's prologue, Richter wrote: "...my film 8 x 8 is a bizarre comedy-drama, signs and sounds not only out of this world probably not even in the next. 8 x 8 mixes equal parts of Freud and Lewis Carroll, with Venice, Venus, and Old Vienna, Cocteau and Bullfights, surrealism, magic, dreams, girls and practically anything else that may currently be in your minds." Hans Richter] undertook [8 x 8] at the suggestion of Marcel Duchamp, a chess enthusiast, after The Minotaur, a planned sequel to the 'Narcissus' episode of Dreams That Money Can Buy, failed to secure funding, although 8 x 8 engaged similar concerns... 'Chess is so universal,' wrote Richter to Jean Cocteau about this new project, 'that practically every human situation has its corresponding move among the countless possibilities of chess...' The filmmaker further recognized a kinship between the work, which took its title from the layout of a chessboard, and Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass. Some of the artists who appeared in this film included Max Ernst, Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and Alexander Calder. The photographs are accompanied by a reprint of an article that was written by Lewis Carroll collectors, August and Clare Imholtz, for the Fall 2019 issue of "Knight Letter" about the film and its participants, along with a discussion of each of the photos. It would be a valuable item for any Eleanor Powell collection or for a collection of memorabilia from that era. It is a compilation of 71 pages of photographs of Ms. Powell, most being color or black & white publicity stills and portraits, with a few signed or autographed items. She assembled about 300 color and black and white photos of Shirley, clipped primarily from contemporary magazines. The photos were glued onto pages inserted in a school two-ring binder. The pictures include publicity stills from her early years along with scenes from several of her movies dating through 1934, including Baby Take a Bow, Now and Forever, and The Little Colonel. The first several pages have full-page pictures while the remaining pages have several images per page. Some of the interior pages have darkening along the margins but the images are not affected. The deluxe book is beautifully bound in blue Asahi silk cloth and is housed in a protective clamshell box with a drawer that contains authentic ephemera from Pickford's career. The ephemera included with this copy include a typed letter signed by Pickford written in 1935 to Mr. Carl Gray thanking him for a letter about her article, "Why Die?" featured in Liberty magazine; two United Artists publicity postcards; a film cell from an early 20th century Charlie Chaplin film (this type of film is flammable; however, a single cell should not pose a problem for most collections); a postcard of the Pickford residence sent by a women who took a Hollywood field trip; an 8-page "Echos Programme" (No. 68) featuring Pickford; an original Canadian stamp featuring an image of Pickford by George Walker - mounted on a signed print; a small vintage color illustration of Pickford; and a reproduction of a bi-fold publicity release for her performance in "Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall."
