Boston: New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute, 1884. Hardcover. One of 2000 copies. An interesting albeit short-lived publication that was done for the Institute by Arthur B. Turnure, proprietor at the time of the Art Age Press in NY. Turnure also created Vogue Magazine in 1882 and was a founder of the Grolier Club in January 1884. This year-book's preface states that the object of the publication "is to present to the world a volume, in which the highest American art products of the year are represented by means of suitable graphic arts, and produced entirely by means of American brains, labor, and materials." The first section offers a history and policy of the Institute, which was incorporated in 1879. The next section, the largest, provides an overview of 1884 art exhibits, the work of various prominent artists, and activities in various fields such as architecture, bookmaking, ceramics brass work, furniture, and jewelry. It is followed by a section with eleven examples of various graphic processes. All are in black and white except for a stunning lithograph from a painting by H. Hamilton Gibson. There are then several pages titled "Catalogue of Exhibits," and 16 pages of advertisements. Bound in cream paper covered boards with title with color design on front cover. Quite soiled , chipped and bumped. Interior pages are generally very good, with some foxing or spotting on some of the types of paper used. Measures 9.5 x 12.5 inches. Unpaginated (about 100 pages). The leather on the spine is split along the front hinge and there is a large chip to the spine leather. The boards remains attached; although, the front board is a little loose. Ex-library with library stamps to fore edge and copyright page. Clean interior filled with samples of color printing and many articles. Browning and foxing to margins of most pages. Occasional smudge marks. Previous owner signature dated 1902 to front free endpaper. Full marbled edges and endpapers. This is a monumental and comprehensive German reference work on the posters produced in Europe and the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. Volume I covers Great Britain and the United States; Volume II covers France and Belgium; Volume III with text and Volume IV with plates cover Germany. Multiple authors and scholars have cataloged and described thousands of posters, accompanied by black and white and color reproductions of each. Bound in gray cloth with paper title labels to spines and front covers. All volumes are in brightly colored dust jackets with titles to spines and covers. All but Volume I are housed in simple cardboard slipcases. In very good to near fine condition. Volume I: 227 pages; Volume II: 421 pages; Volume III: 506 pages: Volume IV: 363 pages. Paris: Abbé de la Chau and Abbé Le Blond, 1780 and 1784. Hardcover. These two sumptuous French volumes describe the Duc of Orléans's magnificent collection of pierre gravées - "engraved stones or gems" - that was acquired over the years. This was the collection of Louis Philippe (1725-1785) that was inherited by his son Louis Philippe II (1747-1798), The son had the collection for two years but it was sold to Catherine, Empress of Russia in 1787. The volumes include descriptions of every stone included along with beautiful and intricate engravings of each. Most of the subjects are the Greek and Roman divinities. There are also a number of vignettes and cul de lampes throughout the text. There is also an engraving of the Duc designed by the artist Charles-Nicolas Cochin. The two folio volumes are bound in brown speckled calf skin, with gilt rulings to edges of covers, and gilt titling and ornaments to spine compartments. Leather is scuffed and mottled, and gilt has faded in places, with a skillfully rebacked spine in both volumes. Marbled paper endpapers. All edges gilt. Interior pages are in very good to near fine condition. Volume I, published in 1780, is 303 pages; Volume II, published in 1784, is 215 pages. Small folios measuring 8 x 12.5 inches. ART/122820. This hardcover volume includes a letter to the recipient offering the catalog, with instructions for those planning to attend. Also inserted is a folded sheet with the prices realized for the posters offered. There were total sales of $1,513,160. Bound in purple cloth with title in gilt and illustration of a poster affixed to the front cover. Some signs of light wear and fading to spine. Interior is bright and clean with color and b&w images of every poster along with a description and auction estimate. Paris: Chez Poinçot, 1789. Hardcover. A collection of 44 beautiful handcolored botanical plates of which 38 are of various flowers and 6 comprise a visual dictionary of botanical terms. Each plate is accompanied by a page of text describing the plant and its qualities. The plates are in near fine condition but unfortunately the leather binding is not. It is chipped, scuffed, and bumped, and the top half of the spine is missing. The front board is almost detached although the text block is firm. Baltimore: Aquarius Press, 1971. This is a stunning production from Baltimore's Aquarius Press that showcases the masterful etchings of Warrington Colescott. There were 122 copies numbered, titled, dated and signed by the artist. In addition there were eight portfolios lettered A through H also signed and dated reserved for the collaborators. This is portfolio C. The contents are loose as issued in a brown wrappers and housed in gilt-lettered blue paper-covered clamshell folding case. Accompanied by a copy of Thomas Mann's classic Death in Venice printed by Alfred Knopf in New York, 1965, also housed in the clamshell case. Warrington Wickham Colescott Jr. (1921 – 2018) was an American artist best known for his satirical etchings. He was a master printmaker and operated Mantegna Press in Hollandale, Wisconsin for several years. Colescott first gained critical notice in the 1950s and exhibited frequently throughout the subsequent decades and was honored with numerous grants, fellowships, and awards. Critics likened Colescott's work to his contemporaries as well as historic antecedents such as Goya, Daumier, and Grosz. In fine condition. Elephant folio measuring about 24 inches. PRI/070822. Fine.

London: George Bell and Sons, 1901. Hardcover. Herkomer (1849 - 1914) was a German born painter, who lived mostly in England but spent many summers in his native Bavaria. He was known for painting scenes of poor people and also the Queen on her deathbed. He was also an early film director and composer. Sadly, none of his seven films are in existence any longer.
