The book artist writes: "The book explores ideas central to Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass including transcendentalism, or the inherent goodness of nature, and realism, depicting familiar things as they are. It captures both the complexity and simplicity of nature by juxtaposing dimensional paper grass texture and a quote about nature and wonder. The book is not a reprinting of all of Whitman’s words, but an art object that encapsulates the feeling of Whitman." Her evocative work is done as a box that opens like a traditional book. The inside front cover and back cover are covered with cream paper that includes quotes from Whitman along with his image. Inside of the box/book are several spiky rows of grass leaves crafted from green paper. The box is covered with green paper with the title, author and press name in a lighter shade of green. London: Hugh Cunninham, 1841. First edition of this lively novel in book form. It appeared in serial form in The Sunday Times in twelve installments in 1841. William Harrison Ainsworth (1805 – 1882) was a popular English historical novelist who trained as a lawyer, but the legal profession held no attraction for him and he devoted himself to journalism and literature. He wrote 39 novels over the course of his career. In 1840, Ainsworth published Guy Fawkes and The Tower of London. When their serial publications were completed at the end of the year, Ainsworth began writing Old St. Paul's, A Tale of the Plague and the Fire. Ainsworth, in a letter to James Crossley 7 December 1840, wrote: "You told me that you have a second part of De Foe's History of the Plague. Pray bring this with you. I will take the greatest care of it, but it is quite necessary I should see it, as I commence a new Romance with the New Year, under the title of The Plague of London. If you have any other tract relating to the period, or to the Fire, I shall feel obliged by the loan of it". Ainsworth was paid £1,000 for the work with control of the copyright. The work was later illustrated when it was published in a three volume set by Cunningham [Wikipedia]. Bound in three quarter black leather over maroon marbled paper boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Some rubbing, bumping to edges of covers, and wear to boards. Text pages are lightly aged and there is scattered spotting and foxing though out. Volume III is missing its title page. With modest library labels on pastedowns and stamps on title pages from St. Charles College in Catonsville, MD. Ownership stamp of Rev. J.B. Troy on free front endpapers. The twenty handsome plates by Franklin also show spotting that is generally confined to the margins. Very good condition. Small octavos. Baltimore: Aquarius Press, 1969. Hardcover. This is a special deluxe edition of this stunning first book from the Aquarius Press, a then new Baltimore private press. The edition comprises the book and a separate portfolio of the 16 signed and numbered lithographs for the book as well as 6 additional unrelated erotic lithographs. The sixteen illustrations are numbered 47/80 copies and signed and numbered by Castellon. On the back of each are the letters AP for artist's proof. The six additional illustrations are signed by Castellon and numbered E/E. The book is Letter A of the ten copies reserved for the collaborators. Signed by the artist Federico Castellon. The work appeared two years before the death of Spanish American artist and lithographer Castellon in 1971. Castellon, born in 1914, was a well known painter, sculptor, and printmaker who is best known for his graphic works that incorporated the influences of surrealism. The 16 evocative color lithographs he did for this book are both surreal and haunting. This beautiful work was designed by Bert Clarke and the text set in Monotype Walbaum and printed by Clarke & Way in New York City. The binding is by the Russell Rutter Company. Done under the editorial direction of John Ross and Jacob Landau. Both book and portfolio are bound in decorative light brown fabric and a black leather spine with titling in gilt. Housed in a custom black cloth covered clamshell box. In fine condition. Volumes measure 11.25 x 15 inches. PRI/062922. Fine.

Louisa Baldwin was one of the four MacDonald sisters, all of whom married notable men. Louisa married industrialist Alfred Baldwin and was the mother of prime minister Stanley Baldwin; Alice, the mother of Rudyard Kipling and Alice "Trix" MacDonald Kipling, married the sculptor Lockwood Kipling; Agnes married artist Edward Poynter; and Georgiana married Edward Burne-Jones. The recipient of this book "Trix" Kipling, later Fleming, was Rudyard's sister and Louisa's niece. This is one of many titles of fiction and poetry written by Louisa, many published with Mrs. Alfred Baldwin as the author. Bound in publisher's dark blue cloth with gilt title and author to spine. Bumped, rubbed, light stains, and slightly cocked. Interior pages are very good with typical offsetting to free endpapers. With six illustrations by J. A. Symington. London: William Heinemann, 1892. Hardcover. Scarce First Edition published posthumously. It includes a biographical sketch of Balestier written by Henry James. Wolcott Balestier was born in 1861 and died at the very young age of 30 in 1891 from Typhoid fever. Despite his brief career he became known in literary circles, in part because of his close association with Rudyard Kipling, who married Balestier's sister in 1892. Bound in the original light blue cloth with a feather design to front cover and spine. Spine is faded and there is light bumping and handling to covers, otherwise in nice condition. There is slight cracking to front hinge and cracking along some of the signatures, but the binding is tight. There is offsetting to the front and rear end pages and intermittent light foxing. The book plate of a previous owner, Chauncey Brewster Tinker has also caused a round offset to the facing end page. Tinker was a professer at Yale and a leading Boswell scholar. A previous owner or book dealer has a penciled note on the front pastedown that there were 2000 copies of this book printed, of which 620 were pulped. 188 pages plus 8 pages of ads. LIT/072109.
