London: Colburn and Co., 1852. Hardcover. A scarce copy of this engaging compilation from the expedition under the command of Captain Austin that sailed from the Thames on May 4, 1850 in search of Sir John Franklin and his missing men. Franklin’s ill-fated 1845 voyage was in search of the elusive Northwest Passage, and ultimately he and his crew did not survive. Captain Austin’s expedition comprising four ships became locked in ice in the Arctic waters for eleven months, finally arriving back in England in October. This work is not a narrative of that expedition nor an actual journal. It is a fascinating and sometimes humorous collection of articles written by the officers and men for an onboard monthly newsletter called the “Aurora Borealis.” The articles are described in the preface as possessing a “delicacy of imagination and a power of perception.” The newspaper was one of many expedition resources used during the trip to provide both employment and amusement. There was a reading room and classes, a theater, periods of exercise and games, and more. Bound in contemporary three-quarter brown leather with brown and cream marbled paper boards. Leather is chipped and scraped, and bottom of spine is darkened and abraded. The rear hinge is cracked, but has been reinforced. Marbled endpapers with small chip to front and scrape and partially cracked rear hinge. Title page and verso are chipped and have book stamp of Headlee’s Book Exchange. A few early pages are present, but loose. Nice color frontispiece, black & white title page vignette, and a few text engravings. Interior pages are clean with light aging to margins. Boston: New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute, 1884. Hardcover. One of 2000 copies. An interesting albeit short-lived publication that was done for the Institute by Arthur B. Turnure, proprietor at the time of the Art Age Press in NY. Turnure also created Vogue Magazine in 1882 and was a founder of the Grolier Club in January 1884. This year-book's preface states that the object of the publication "is to present to the world a volume, in which the highest American art products of the year are represented by means of suitable graphic arts, and produced entirely by means of American brains, labor, and materials." The first section offers a history and policy of the Institute, which was incorporated in 1879. The next section, the largest, provides an overview of 1884 art exhibits, the work of various prominent artists, and activities in various fields such as architecture, bookmaking, ceramics brass work, furniture, and jewelry. It is followed by a section with eleven examples of various graphic processes. All are in black and white except for a stunning lithograph from a painting by H. Hamilton Gibson. There are then several pages titled "Catalogue of Exhibits," and 16 pages of advertisements. Bound in cream paper covered boards with title with color design on front cover. Quite soiled , chipped and bumped. Interior pages are generally very good, with some foxing or spotting on some of the types of paper used. Measures 9.5 x 12.5 inches. Unpaginated (about 100 pages). Nypels on the press of Leiter-Nypels in Maastricht in Erasmus Mediaeval type by S.H. de Roos. Bound in tan paper wrappers with orange illustration of a tree with lions to front wrappers. Wear and toning to spine. Wear to joints and edges of wrappers including a dampstain to the bottom edge of the rear wrapper and rubbing to front panel. New York: McLoughlin Bros, circa 1890. Paperback. Rare. A rather depressing story of morality in verse about two orphaned children who are left in their uncle's care. Rather than raise them, he arranges to have them murdered so that he can collect their inheritence. The children are abandoned in the woods and starve to death. The uncle suffers from God's wrath with very bad luck following his terrible deed - his two sons die, he loses his home and fortune, confesses, and he is executed.

A shape book featuring a chromolithograph of very sad childen in historic dress to the front cover. Bound in side-stapled stiff paper wrappers with title in gold to front wrapper. Creasing and soiling to head of one child and his hat as well as chipping to edges of wrappers. Minor foxing, rubbing, spots of soiling, smudge marks to interior, but clean overall. Wear to spine with closed tear along foot and chipping. The cover and six interior pages are chromolithographs. The remaining pages are printed in black and red. Annapolis: A.C. and W. Green, 1770. An interesting and uncommon piece of early Maryland currency. This $8 bill was issued in Annapolis on March 1, 1770. It is signed in ink by Robert Couden and John Clapham, two Annapolis government and political officials. The serial number is 9117, also written in ink. The bill was printed by Anne Catherine Green, wife of printer Jonas Green and an early woman printer herself in Annapolis, and her son William. The bill is browned with a bit of light chipping. Small closed tear along bottom, and there is clear tape along a crease or closed tear running down the middle. There are ornamental designs on both sides and the Sparrow seal is printed on the front of the bill. This seal first appeared in 1765 on the title page of the Reverend Thomas Bacon's compilation of the Laws of Maryland, and until 1793 it ornamented printed editions of the session laws of the Assembly. Carved on a wood block by Thomas Sparrow, ward and employee of the Annapolis printer, Jonas Green, the Sparrow seal bears the Latin motto "Crescite et Multiplicamini," which means "Increase and Multiply."
