An interesting association copy - the book is inscribed on the title page by Anne Crawford Flexner, who had secured the dramatic rights for Mason's novel: "(Alfred Edward Woodley Mason) (Dramatized by Mrs. Flexner and presented in N.Y. in 1901 by Mrs. Fiske & Lee [?])" Anne Crawford Flexner (1874-1955) was a successful American playwright and an early advocate of the women's suffrage movement. This was her first produced play. It was produced and staged by Minnie Fiske, who also played the title role. Bound in the original blue cloth with the bright gilt title stamped to cover and spine, along with a lovely embossed floral design. t.e.g. Light wear to edges and spine ends. Inscribed by Oliphant: “Royal Phelps from his sincere friend The Author London Febr 57.” Oliphant was a well known traveler, author, diplomat, and mystic who served as the private secretary to Lord Elgin in the mid 1800s among many other roles. Royal Phelps was a prominent New York merchant and trader in the West Indies. It is unclear where they might have met. This uncommon book is generally in very good condition in the original green cloth binding with faded gold title and gold stamped portrait on front cover. Neatly rebacked spine with most of the original spine intact; fading and spotting to front and rear covers; and bumping to corners. Interior is clean save for some foxing to illustrations and offsetting from them to facing pages, and light aging to page margins. This book is a tale of jewels, intrigue, and high Russian society. It is scarce in this condition. The author, Baroness Orczy (1865 - 1947), was born in Hungary and grew up in London.
