Gerrards Cross: Colin Smythe, 1984. Hardcover. Amine Gemayel (born 1942) was president of Lebanon from 1982-1988. His brother, Bachir, has been elected president in early 1982, but was assassinated, after which Amine was elected to the office. He was endorsed by both the United States and Israel. Lebanon had been in a state of conflict for the previous 8 years, including Israel's occupation of Southern Lebanon in early 1982. With international support, Gemayel was able to negotiate for the withdrawal of Israeli forces. However, the Gemayel government did not have a lot of authority over competing factions. Today southern Lebanon is under the control of Hezbollah, a significant force in the regional conflict. This book consists of the speeches by Gemayel in the first 1 1/2 years of his presidency. Their emphasis is on maintaining the unity of Lebanon's multicultural and multireligious population and on achieving peace in the region. Octavo. Blue cloth covered boards with gilt title to spine. Brussels: François Foppens, 1723. Hardcover. A new edition, divided into five volumes, enriched with figures and augmented with several treatises, contracts, wills, and other new documents. This popular work was reprinted several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. Bound in red leather with gilt rulings and title and volume labels to spines. All edges gilt. Joints are rubbed as is leather, and there is bumping and significant wear to each volume. Spine labels are chipped with pieces missing from some. Marbled endpapers with gilt dentelles. Ex-library with spine label stating Quebec Library. Library label on front pastedown "Bibliotheca Lamoniana," covered with another label with the shelf location. The Bibliotheca Lamoniana was a family library built up over two centuries, the most important collector being the last, Chrétien-François de Lamoignon (1735-1789). All of the books in this collection had an unusual mark of ownership, a crowned L in the margin of page 3 of the text. This is present in these volumes. Interior pages have varying degrees of aging and occasional spots. Still quite legible and in very good condition. Each painter has a section of the book devoted to his biography and his art. There is a mounted photograph of each artist, a brief biography and description of his work, three or four full page engraved plates from paintings or drawings, and several copies of the artist's many sketches of his fellow soldiers. Bound in three quarter red leather and black pebbled cloth with gilt titling to spine and front cover. Covers are frayed, bumped, and chipped but interior pages are very good+. Unpaginated. Liverpool: Printed by G.F. Harris's Widow and Brothers, 1817. Hardcover. This is the first edition of an interesting and monumental work that was compiled and edited by Matthew Gregson (1749-1824), who was born at Liverpool in 1749. He was many years in business as an upholsterer, and when he retired in 1814 had amassed considerable property. Although he had little education he took a deep interest in literature and science, and especially devoted attention to the collection of documentary and pictorial illustrations of the history of Lancashire. These he used in compiling his Portfolio of Fragments relative to the History and Antiquities of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster, which he brought out in 1817 in three folio parts. The second and enlarged edition is dated 1824, and the third, edited and indexed by John Harland (1806–1868), a fellow antiquary specializing in Lancashire, came out in 1867. This work led to Gregson's election as a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries [Wikipedia]. In his preface, Gregson states that he did not attempt to give his materials for this book the "arrangement which the rules of historical composition require; as he has collected, so he may be said to have published, having in view the value of each individual document rather than the composition of a chain of historical events." Thus the result is a massive collection of information about the Duchy of Lancaster of every kind from textual history, to coats of arms, crowns, coronets, crests, etc. forming a useful basis for the history of that period.
Bound in marbled paper boards with three quarter leather. The boards are scraped and the corners are very rubbed. The leather is scratched and rubbed. Two of the spine labels have pieces missing. Except for occasional spotting, the interior pages are quite clean and bright. There are two fold-outs. The one at the front of the book is fine. The rear fold-out has some tears from unfolding but still of use. With bookplate of Stephen Leslie Norris and ownership signature of Jane Noble Pilkington dated Dec. 1828. Very good condition. Inlaid in both covers are pieces from the original cloth bindings with the original gilt title stamps. Small chip to head of spine of second volume. Minor wear to bindings including light wear to spines, edges of boards, and corners. slight fraying to cloth where cloth meets the leather corners. Bookplate to front pastedowns, which appear to be preserved and re-adhered from original binding. The bookplates have been pasted down upside-down with a few water spots. Slight browning and occasional smudge marks to page margins, but clean and bright overall. Remnants of glue to rear pastedowns suggesting that these might be ex-library; however, no other noticeable library markings. Chipping and closed tears to edges of some pages.
