London: John Churchill, 1842. Hardcover. Askern is a town in South Yorkshire, England. This book details the history and environs of the town and also provides information on it's pools of mineral water and various accounts of its medicinal use. Apparently, the water was very sulphuric and was useful for farmers in curing chafed feet, mangy dogs, and even leprosy. Additional chapters on chemical studies of the waters, baths and bathing, and suggested usages are included.

Very good in original brown cloth boards with gilt title to spine and blind stamped design to covers. The spine title reads: Lankester's Askern. Minor fading to spine and edges of boards along with a few spots of soiling, bumped corners, and minor edgewear. Paper remnant of label to foot of spine. Two ownership inscriptions, one of which is crossed out, a bookplate to front pastedown, and an ownership stamp to the rear pastedown. Lacks front free endpage. Remnants of old tape to margins of title page. Includes fold-out color map and errata slip. A relevant newspaper article has been tipped-in near the front. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1989. Hardcover. Walter Laqueur (1921-2018) was born in Germany to a Jewish family. He emigrated to the Palestinian Mandate in 1938, but his parents were killed in the Holocaust. He subsequently moved to London and founded Soviet Survey, a CIA-funded journal to counter Soviet propaganda. He was a member, and eventually Chairman, of the International Research Council of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Washington. He was also a professor or visiting professor at several universities. Laqueur was extensively published on Naziism, the Holocaust, Arab-Israeli relations, the Cold War, Russia, and terrorism. This book was published during the ascendancy of Glasnost and the Soviet leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev, prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Laqueur provides a historical perspective for glasnost (or, openness) and emphasizes that it is an approach, not a political philosophy. Laqueur ends with a chapter on "Glasnost and Russia's Future", in which he is very cautious about glasnost having a lasting impact on Russia. This has certainly been borne out with the rule of Vladimir Putin. Laqueur saw this failure occurring as early as 1993 and published a number of titles addressing that in subsequent years. Roderick MacLeish was a television and radio commentator for Westinghouse Broadcasting Company, and later for CBS, NPR, and the Christian Science Monitor. He was a correspondent internationally for many years, including in the Middle East. This book is about the Three Day War of 1967, and was published in the same year. MacLeish was sent by Westinghouse to cover the situation in May 1967. He first visited Cairo and then arrived in Tel Aviv on June 4. The war broke out on June 5.
