Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1870. Hardcover. The uncommon FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. This was to be Rossetti’s last attempt at fiction. The title story, Commonplace, was a Jane Austen-like work of satirical social observation and commentary. It was the tale of three parentless sisters and their paths to marriage or another fate. It was published May 5, 1870, and was not well-received, unlike her earlier poetical works. Bound in original green publisher’s cloth with gilt title and author to spine. Very good plus except for wear to top and bottom of spine and bumping to board corners. Dark brown endpapers. There is light spotting to front endpapers, title page and contents page as well as to fore-edges, otherwise the interior is clean and bright. London: James Bowden, 1897. Hardcover. 1 of 500 copies. Includes prefatory note by her brother, William Rossetti that discusses the history of the work and his sister’s objectives in writing it. He believed that his sister’s main objective was to delineate through Maude what she regarded as defects in her own character and in her attitude towards her social circle and religious obligations. Maude was written in 1850, when Christina Rossetti was only 19 years old. A few changes were made by her to the manuscript in 1874 or 1875. William states that the book is “in all senses a juvenile performance: but I think it is agreeably written and not without touches of feminine perception and discernment.” Blue cloth boards with gilt title to spine and gilt facsimile of author's signature to front board. Cleveland and New York: The World Publishing Company, 1960. Hardcover. "This special edition of Shakespeare's Progress is limited to 975 copies for private distribution to friends of the publisher Christmas 1960." This work was originally published in England under the title The Road to Stratford. It is a critical work written in hopes of helping to improve the quality of theatrical performances of Shakespeare. O'Connor notes in his preface that he's seen modern pieces have more successful performances on stage than Shakespeare despite being poorly written - and he attributes this to the performers and directors not being able to personally know the playwright and his intentions. While not much is known about Shakespeare's biographical information, O'Connor endeavors to provide background knowledge on the man and his works based on what is known of the time period and other playwrights, plays, and word-play of the time.

London and Manchester: John F. Shaw; T. Dinham and Co, 1856. Hardcover. A collection of lectures published posthumously by a late professor at the University of Pennsylvania. A collection of lectures published posthumously by Henry Hope Reed (1808 - 1854), a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He is best known for the assistance he provide to William Wordsworth in preparing an American edition of his poetry. In this book which collects a series of lectures on Shakespeare, Reed discusses his historical dramas as they relate to historical facts - beginning with Shakespeare's portrayal of King John and ending with Henry VIII, which span across the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. He also discusses tragic poetry using Shakespeare's four tragedies to illustrate the aim and scope of tragic poetry. Reed states: "I wish to inqurie, how a true poet deals with human heart when he awakens its solemn sympathies, and why it is that such sympathies - the sentiments of pity, sorrow, and even anguish - are stirred within the soul by the agency of the imagination" (201).

Baltimore: The Norman Publishing Co., 1930. Hardcover. John H.K. Shannahan (1880-1934) was an amateur historian of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He was born in Easton, Maryland. He was one of the founders of the Eastern Shore Society and later served as its president. He also wrote articles about the Eastern Shore for the Evening Sun and the Sunday Sun newspapers of Baltimore. This is a limited edition publication Signed by the Author. Number 103 of 300 copies. It is subtitled "An Eastern Shore Romance." According to Shannahan's introduction, this publication is in response to the positive feedback toward his earlier articles in the Sunday Sun, which suggested that they "be amplified and published in more permanent form." The book is intended to give a picture of village life on the Eastern Shore in the 1880s. It also contains a novelette, The Hammond Lot, first published in a New York magazine in 1910.

London: William Heinemann, 1895. Hardcover. Scarce, especially in the United States. George Slythe (G.S.) Street (1867-1936) was a British writer. He was known for his satirical works that attacked pretentiousness in society, especially among the aesthetes and the upper class. His best known work was his debut 1894 novel The Autobiography of a Boy, which satirized the contemporary aesthetes Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas. Episodes is his second publication (1895) and contains a serious of witty vignettes in his usual style. For example, the first story, "The Blackmailer", is about Lord Charles, whose "profession is and was that of living at the rate of twice his income. It is rather a fatiguing profession..." In "A Man of Sentiment", he writes that "Colvert was a novelist ... and he produced novels methodically - two a year ... or maybe three ... when you had read one of Colvert's novels, you had read, so far as scheme and the nature of their interest was concerned, them all." Street is an under appreciated writer for those who love bon mots, especially from an Englishman. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo.
