Paris: Plon-Nourrit et C(ie). Hardcover. André Lichtenberger (1870-1940, Paris) was a French novelist and sociologist. This novel, published in 1910, is the story of a young boy, Michel, who inherits the throne of a fictional European country. The novel is the basis for a 1933 French film directed by Julien Duvivier and starring Robert Lynen, Arlette Marchal and Béatrice Bretty. 12mo. Brown patterned cloth-covered boards, with light brown leather covering to spine. Title in gilt to spine. Cover shows minor wear and scuffing to edges and corners. John Lane: The Bodley Head, 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE FIRST EDITION, IN ORIGINAL BINDING, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. William J. Locke (1863-1930) was a prolific British writer best known for his short stories, but he also wrote many novels and plays. from 1894 until his death in 1930. According to the Chambers Biographical Dictionary, his "long series of novels and plays which with their charmingly written sentimental themes had such a success during his life in both Britain and America.... His plays, some of which were dramatized versions of his novels, were all produced with success on the London Stage." His books were often on the US best-selling lists, and many were adapted to film or stage. Idols tells the story of 4 innocent people whose lives were turned to turmoil by a murder committed by two robbers who were eventually captured and executed. This incident set ablaze a train of events that made the 4 protagonists "almost impersonal instruments of destiny." Octavo. Blue cloth-covered boards with light grey title to spine. New York: Asa K. Butts and Co, 1874. Hardcover. Frederika Macdonald (1845–1923) was a Victorian writer who for a time attended school in Brussells with Charlotte Bronte. She later wrote of this experience in the biography The Secret of Charlotte Bronte. (1914) She also wrote a biography of Jean Jacques Rousseau. In addition, Macdonald wrote fiction, translated foreign works, and contributed to the periodical press. VERY SCARCE. Nathaniel Vaughan is not included in any internet lists of the works of Macdonald, although one source suggests that she did write at least one novel (not specified). This is a very unusual find.

An interesting association copy - the book is inscribed on the title page by Anne Crawford Flexner, who had secured the dramatic rights for Mason's novel: "(Alfred Edward Woodley Mason) (Dramatized by Mrs. Flexner and presented in N.Y. in 1901 by Mrs. Fiske & Lee [?])" Anne Crawford Flexner (1874-1955) was a successful American playwright and an early advocate of the women's suffrage movement. This was her first produced play. It was produced and staged by Minnie Fiske, who also played the title role.
A modern retelling of Homer's Odyssey which later influenced James Joyce's Ulysses. New York: Macmillan Company, 1929. Hardcover. LIMITED EDITION. Number 291 of 500 copies signed by the author and the illustrator. George Moore (1852-1933) was a Roman Catholic Irish writer, art critic, and dramatist. As a naturalistic writer, he was amongst the first English-language authors to follow the style of the French realists. He is considered by some to be the first great modern Irish novelist, and his works supposedly influenced James Joyce. The Brook Kerith was one of his later novels, initially published in 1916. It was controversial both because it its writing style, which rejected the Victorian style and included long unindented paragraphs, no quotation marks, and long sections on minor observations; as well as its subject, which was that Jesus did not die on the cross.
This edition is completely revised and reset. Bound with black paper boards with half vellum spine. Binding is worn, chipped, bumped, and rubbed, and the vellum spine is quite browned and faded. Interior pages are generally clean with some offsetting from tissue guards over plates and light browning to the limitation page. Although the title page states that there are 12 engravings, this volume has only the nine plates on the list of illustrations and two text engravings on the first and last pages. A very good text in a fair only binding. Measures 6.25 x 10.25 inches. 391 pages. LIT/101321. Very Good. More
