Pencil notation "Augustin Daly Collection" beneath number. First edition. Includes three portraits and copies of letters from men of eminence and other original documents of interest to play-goers. English actor and theater manager Samuel Phelps (1804 - 1878) was best known for his performances as Hamlet and King Lear. He managed Sadler's Well Theatre in London where he insisted that Shakespearean plays be returned to the original text from the first folios. Bound in three quarter tan leather over marbled paper covered boards with red label "Stage Biography" and green title / author label beneath. This is part of a series of books Daly had bound in a matching style, all labeled "Stage Biography." Rubbing, pulling, and wear to leather. A few smudge marks to margins, but clean and bright overall. Unopened pages. Top edge gilt with marbled endpapers. Bound by R.W. Smith. 436 page plus 32 pages of ads. DRA/031419. Very Good.
Little Bird Books, 2004. Softcover. Scarce early mini-comic created by cartoonist Lark Pien. Lark Pien (born c. 1972) is an American cartoonist who has created the minicomics Stories from the Ward, Mr. Boombha, and Long Tail Kitty, the last of which won her the Friends of Lulu Kimberly Yale Award for Best New Talent in 2004. Her work has also been showcased in the Flight comics anthology. Pien earned her Bachelor of Architecture in 1995 from California Polytechnic State University. She began making comics in 1997. She is based in Oakland, California. This story of the long tail kitty follows his imaginary adventures and misadventures on one night. He encounters the circus and elephants, a fortune teller who informs him that he is going to like brocoli, robots and more. Entertainingly drawn comic strip style by Pien in black and white. Bound in multi-colored paper wrappers. Very good save for a couple of light marks on rear cover. Interior pages near fine. 4 x 5.5 inches. Unpaginated [38 pages]. Near Fine.
