Meriden, CT: Bayberry Hill Press, 1965. Number 5 of 75 copies.Those numbered 1 to 43 constitute Keepsake Number 86 of the Columbiad Club of Connecticut. Numbers 44-75 were for private distribution by the Press. The Johnsons were the proprietors of the Bayberry Hill Press. They write of their journey to Oxford and Kelmscott Manor in a charming, enthusiastic and, yes, sentimental way. Their text combines some history of the Bodleian Library and William Morris's Kelmscott Manor with descriptions of scenery and villages. They also describe the pubs and restaurants they ate at and some of the people they met. They loved everything of course, despite not being able to go into Kelmscott Manor, which was closed for renovations. Bound in dark red paper with Morris's Acorn pattern wallpaper with dark red spine. Author and title labels on spine and front cover. Printed in Bruce Rogers's Centaur type with Arrighi italics The book is in near fine condition. Its glassine is creased and torn on the spine and lower edge. He planned to do an edition elaborately illustrated by his great friend, the artist Edward Burne-Jones but it was never realized. This Kelmscott Press edition had eight volumes that were issued between July 1896 and September 1897. There were 225 paper copies and 6 copies on vellum. These eight leaves are from volume three and contain pages 17-32 of The Story of Cupid and Psyche. They are attached as one signature. The beautiful text pages have three six-line decorated initials and twenty-four 4-line initials. Printed on Apple paper in Golden type using red and black inks. This was the first book in which Apple paper was used. Pages measure 6.5 x 9.5 inches. Except for some light browning to page edges the leaves are in near fine condition. Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1893. One of 1500 copies. This copy is in an exquisite binding from master Chicago binder Alfred J. Cox (1835-1909). Cox founded a bindery in Chicago in the 1860s that became the largest commercial bindery west of the Mississippi River. Cox was also a serious book collector who bound many books in his personal collection in sumptuous designer bindings. His philosophy was that "books of the imagination...demand rich morocco, fanciful ornaments, and gilding. This binding exemplifies his philosophy. It is in brown morocco with a beautiful gilt flower design on the front and rear covers, with gilt ruling around the edges. The spine has five raised bands with title, author, and ornaments in the compartments. The dentelles also have a lovely gilt floral design. With marbled endpapers. The book's colophon states that Gothic Architecture, first given as a lecture for the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society in the year 1889, was printed by the Kelmscott Press during the Society’s exhibition in 1893. It is printed in Golden type on Flower paper, and was the first book printed in 16mo. by the press. According to William Peterson's bibliography of the press (p. 48-51), “there were three impressions of the book, presumably of 500 copies each.” There were two misspellings in the first impression. “Van Eyck “ was misspelled “Van Eyk” (p. 45, l.1.), and “guilds was spelled “gilds” (p. 45, l. 16). This copy has the correct spellings of these two words and is from the second or third impression. Printed with Golden type on Flower paper. There are four and six line initials and red shoulder notes throughout. Light paper aging along fore-edge otherwise near fine. MOR/021720. More

Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, [1896]. Arthur Gaskin. Five text pages plus two of the twelve full page illustrations by Arthur Gaskin. This was one of the later books of the Kelmscott Press, and it was finished several days after Morris's death on October 3, 1896. These beautiful sample pages include the first three pages for "Januarie" and the first two for March. The Januarie pages are in near fine condition but the March leaf has a tear along the bottom margin not affecting text. Each has a striking ten line first initial. The two Gaskin illustrations are printed on the versos of a bifold leaf. There is a three inch tear along the bottom of the fold not affecting the illustrations. In his bibliography of the Kelmscott Press, William Peterson writes that The Golden Legend was intended to be the first book produced by the press, but because of its length and some problems with paper delivery, Morris was forced to issue several shorter volumes before it was completed. The book was completed in three volumes and a celebratory dinner was held in October 1892 (Bibliography pages 19-24). It was printed in Golden type on Flower paper. These 6 leaves display the fine printing and handsome Morris-designed ornamental initials. The leaves comprise pages 563-57. There are twenty-three 6-line initials and two 10-line initials.They are attached as in a signature. The pages are in very good condition with slight aging to margins.
