A View of Congregationalism

Salem: John P. Jewett, 1840. Hardcover. VERY SCARCE EXCEPT IN MODERN REPRINTS. Congregationalism originated from 16th-century Puritanism. Many Puritans believed the Church of England should adopt a presbyterian governance, in which a network of local ministers cooperated through regional councils. Other Puritans went further, promoting congregational governance. In this governance, the congregation would choose its own leaders, and the ministers would be ordained by the congregation itself. In England, the early Congregationalists were called Separatists or Independents. Congregationalism in the United States traces its origins to the Puritans of New England, who wrote the Cambridge Platform of 1648 to describe the autonomy of the church. George Punchard (1806-1880) was a New England editor and Congregational clergyman who is also known for his work History of Congregationalism from A. D. 250 to 1616. Small octavo. In original brown cloth-covered boards with gilt title to spine. Top of spine is missing. Ex-library, with call number on spine, library bookplate on front endpaper, and several library stamps. Foxing throughout. Religion. REL1/8300. Very Good -.
