French author, poet, and statesmen, Lamartine (1790 - 1869) was instrumental in founding the Second Republic of France in which he worked to abolish slavery and the death penalty. This set offers a history of the Girondins, members of a political faction during the French Revolution. It includes many full page portraits of important French figures such as Louis XVI, Lafayette, Mirabeau, Robespierre, Orleans, etc. This attractive set is bound in three-quarter dark brown leather over dark brown pebbled cloth covered boards with gilt title, author, and volume to spines. Wear and rubbing to hinges, corners, spines, and edges of all volumes. Occasional spots of foxing to interiors, but clean overall. Handwritten table of portraits to rear of each volume with a comprehensive table at the end of the first volume. Antiquated ownership penned markings to title page and half title page of first volume dated 1848. Evidence of sticker removed from foot of spines; however, no library stamps to interiors. Full marbled edges and marbled endpapers. An attractive set despite noted wear. Text in French.
