Includes short essays on a large variety of subjects such as the science of history, philosophy of Catholicism, Homer, parables, Thomas Becket, the siding at a railroad station, etc. Froude notes in his preface that not "all" of the topics addressed are actually "great" and some are actually rather insignificant. Bound in three quarter brown leather over marbled paper covered boards with gilt title and author labels to spines. Both hinges of volume I are cracked; however, the boards remain attached. Leather is starting to crack along several of the other hinges. Chipping to leather on spine and corners. Rubbing and wear to boards, spines, corners, and edges. Clean interiors. Full marbled edges and marbled endpapers. Bookplate of Thomas J. McCarthy to all volumes. Volume I: 534 pages; Volume II: 472 pages; Volume III: 400 pages; Volume IV: 370 pages. GENHIS/112122.
