Historic Illustrations of the Bible. Principally After the Old Masters Two Volumes

London: Fisher, Son, & Co., n.d. [circa 1840s]. These two sumptuous volumes contain four series of fine engravings of scenes and events from both books of the bible, with two series in each. The engravings are taken from paintings by famous artists such as Rubens, Copley, Rembrandt, Poussin, Vandyke, da Vinci, Raphael, and many more. There are 30 plates in each series except for the fourth, which includes 33. The plates are accompanied by the relevant text from the bible in English, French, and German. There is also an explanation in English of the meaning of the text.

Bound in pebbled black leather with gilt ornaments and rulings to covers and to ornaments and titling to spine. Leather is rubbed, abraded, and worn. Book corners are bumped, with a small piece of leather missing from the lower right corner of Volume I. Hinges slightly tender. All edges gilt. Text pages are clean with very light aging to margins. The plates are generally in nice condition; however, many have foxing or browning in their margins. Only a few of the actual engravings are also affected. A handsome set in very good condition. Quartos. First Series: 78 pages; Second Series: 78 pages; Third Series: 84 pages; Fourth Series: 92 pages. ART/090822.
