Item #35564 Young Mrs. Ruskin in Venice. Mary Luytens.

Young Mrs. Ruskin in Venice

New York: The Vanguard Press, 1965. Hardcover. The main source of these letters is the Bowerswell Papers, acquired by the Pierpont Morgan Library from Effie Milliais' grandson, Sir Ralph Millais. Effie married John Ruskin in 1848 when she was nineteen, and she secretly left him and had the marriage annulled 6 years later, before marrying John Everett Millais. These letters describe the Ruskin's time in Venice, as well as hint at the difficulties in the marriage. Octavo, maroon paper boards, with some smudging; previous owner's name stamped to bottom of page ends. Gilt titling on spine. No dust jacket. 354 pages, including index. PRERAPH/050422. Very good.
