circa 1856. Calhoun (1782 - 1850) was an American politician who served as vice-president from 1825 - 1832 under two presidents of different political parties. He was also Secretary of State and Secretary of War as well as a Congressman. From South Carolina - he defended slavery and also supported states rights and limited government.
