The Little Schoolmaster Mark; A Spiritual Romance

The Little Schoolmaster Mark; A Spiritual Romance

London: Macmillan and Co., 1885. Hardcover. Joseph Henry Shorthouse (1834-1903) was an English novelist known for what was called "philosophical romances." He was raised as a Quaker but eventually converted to the Church of England. His first novel, John Inglesant, about a 17th century soldier who moves between Anglican and Catholic groups, has been considered one of the best examples of philosophical romance. The Little Schoolmaster Mark, as is evidenced by its subtitle, is in the same vein. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. 8vo. In green cloth covered boards with gilt title stamp to spine. Minor bubbling to cloth of rear board and slightly cocked spine. Minor bumping to head/foot of spine. A few small areas of light discoloration to front board. Minor foxing to end pages. Else is clean and bright. Inscription by the author on the half title page dated, "March 14, 1885." A rare find. 238 pages. LIT/042204. Very Good.
