The books comprise twelve essays which may be compared to separate compartments of one vast picture that offers a masterly survey of the subject. Volume I covers the precursors of Columbus through explorers forays into Mexico and Peru. Volume II begins with an accounting of the naval heroes of Queen Elizabeth , the French in Canada, the Jesuits and the Mississippi, and concludes with the author's observations on the results of the discovery of America on commerce, navigation, science, religion, and politics. Bound in three quarter red leather with marbled paper boards. Leather is scuffed, rubbed, and bumped, with wear along the joints. Title and ornaments in gilt to spine. Interior pages are clean and in very good condition save for mild browning to the page edges and a slight tear to the upper edge of the list of Contents for Volume II. Measures 5 x 8 inches.
