Chicago: F.T. Neely, 1889. Hardcover. A collection of poetry and humorous short stories compiled for the amusement of railway passengers to read on the train. "They [the authors] have decided to issue a guide which will be good for one to read after one has missed one's train by reason of one's faith in otehr guides which we may have in one's luggage. Let it be understood, then, that we are wholly irresponsible, and we are glad of it ... Our plan is to issue a book worth about $9 charging only fifty cents for it and then see to it that no time tables or maps which will never return after they have been pulled out once, shall creep in among its pages" (introduction). Bound in mustard yellow cloth boards with faded gilt title to spine. Black and gilt illustration to front cover. Fraying, rubbing, and wear to edges, hinges, and corners. Filled with illustrations. Pages are a little brittle. Browning to margins of pages and penned signature of previous owner (from Indiana), but clean otherwise. 203 pages. HUM/102518. Very Good.
