First edition of this interesting book of the author's observations on the manners, literature, arts, philosophy, religion, and morals of the people of Germany. In the preface she writes of her great difficulties in getting her book published in France, which included the destruction by French officials of the first printing. Bound in three quarter brown leather with marbled paper boards. Leather is chipped, rubbed and bumped. Paper covers are also scraped. Tender hinges to Volume I and crack to front hinge of Volume II. Endpapers are mottled and browned, and browning to many interior pages. Still quite legible. Small piece of tape to verso of title page in Volume I. Bookplates affixed to front pastedown.
