With title, state proof, and signature in pencil on the lower margin. This striking black and white print of Robinson in turtle armor and with an image of a turtle and its skeleton next to him anticipates his founding of the Cheloniidae Press the following year. Cheloniidae is the name given to a family of Sea Turtle species. Robinson is shown in profile up to his shoulders and his turtle armor on his head and body given him the air of a Renaissance man. Colton & Co in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York. No.43." This map is from one of many variations of reprints from Colton's original "General Atlas," that was printed from 1857 through 1888. Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893) founded the family publishing house in 1831, which remained a major American atlas publisher throughout the 19th century. G.W. (George Woolworth) Colton (1827-1901), Along with brother, C.B. (Charles B.) Colton (1832-1916), took control of the company around 1865. It is a steel engraving. Baltimore is divided into hand colored numbered sections surrounded by the renowned Colton decorative outside border. Displays street names, cemeteries, railroad tracks and stations and major buildings including Fort McHenry., featuring the North West, Main and Middle branches of the Patapsco River. The map title is located in the lower left corner and the one mile scale is located just left of the lower right. Simple compass rose is located in upper right corner. The reverse page contains detailed historical and 1855-1860 census statistics on a variety of subjects regarding the state of Delaware. Minor foxing outside border in margin. A pair of beautifully designed and printed broadsides with several hundred ornamental printing blocks of various sizes and shapes arrayed in a intricate fashion that highlights their beauty. From the colophon: "The collection of blocks above was obtained by the proprietor of the Pembroke Press, Mr. Roland Hoover, circa 1980 from the Pridemark/Garamond Press in Baltimore, MD. Some of these blocks came from an earlier Baltimore printer, Norman T.A. Munder the 'Dean of American Printers," and the display type used here, designed by Robert Wiebking, is "Munder Venezian' named in his honor. Blocks signed with a "G" were designed by Frederic Goudy and some of his original drawings for them are part of the Goudy Archive at the Library of Congress." The broadsides were composed and printed by Chris Manson at his Crooked Crow Press. These are splendid examples of fine printing for private press, book arts, and related collections.
