Lugduni [Lyon]: Apud Petrum Valfray, 1692. Hardcover. A late seventeenth century Latin liturgical book containing rites of the Catholic church, including prayers, hymns, readings, and notations for daily use. It includes a Commune Sanctorum, a collection of psalms, readings, and notes common to a category of saints. There is a ten page handwritten supplement in Latin bound in following the Commune Sanctorum, a handwritten small sheet tipped in between pages 386-387, and a clipping from another contemporary book affixed to back of title page. Bound in contemporary full leather with gilt ruling and ornaments to covers. Gilt decorated spine with five compartments. Chipping, bumping and a small crack to leather at lower edge of spine. Hinges are tender. Printed in black and red with small illustration to title page and two full page engravings. Missing free endpapers. Very good. This is a leaf from a Prayer book and Benedictional for the use of Cistercian Nuns, in Latin, France second quarter of the 16th century (207 x 143 mm). There are eighteen lines in black ink of angular Gothic script from the section of Temporal Benedictions. Provenance: Cistercian House presumably a nunnery since the opening, and only illustrated, office for the profession of female novices, who promise to live secundum regulam sancti Benediciti. The Illumination within this Prayer Book shows considerable similarities with those of the Master of Francois de Rohan, active in Paris from c. 1525 - 1546. Framed. #6802. Fine.
