Loomis Dean was an acclaimed “Life Magazine” photographer who had 52 “Life” covers during his career. This book is the chronicle of the time he spent with Ernest Hemingway in 1960, which was only a year before the writer committed suicide. It is inscribed in black marker on the half title page, “To Phyllis + Bill Gaylor/ who chose Spain/ for their honeymoon!/ Best regards, Loomis Dean/ Venice ‘90” In full color illustrated glossy paper wrappers. The interior high gloss pages are clean and bright and filled with color photographs of Hemingway and bullfighting. The book also contains a typed and signed letter on Dean’s stationery dated “September 30, 1994.” The letter is accompanied by 8 original photographs (mentioned in the letter) taken by Dean when in Spain. Evans (1903 - 1975) was a photojournalist best known for his work documenting the Great Depression. In very good condition in black cloth boards with gilt title to spine. A few speckles to boards and minor foxing to fore-edge, else a clean copy. In an off-white illustrated dust jacket with black title to spine and front panel. Milano: Domus, circa 1960. Hardcover. First Italian Edition. An important survey of Penn's work with an introduction by Alexander Liberman. Penn (1917 - 2009) is best known for his fashion photography, portraits, and still lifes. He worked for Vogue Magazine for many years and took portraits of many important artists and authors such as Picasso, O'Keeffe, Auden, and Duchamp. Very good in white cloth boards with black title to spine. Light smudge mark to front board and previous owner signature to front endpage, else fine. In a white dust jacket with black title to spine. The spine of the jacket is browned and all but detached from the other panels. There is minor wear to the edges of the jacket and a few scuff markings to the rear panel. Housed in a very good paper covered slipcase with black title to spine. The slipcase is rubbed, worn along the edges, and lightly scuffed. Quarto. Text in Italian. 183 pages. PHOTO/052611. Santa Cruz: n.d. This is an undated original photograph taken by Bill Richards, a Santa Cruz fisherman and photographer. The mounted photograph captures a blue whale breaching almost its entire length amidst sea birds swimming and fluttering over the water. On the back of the photo is a mimeographed sheet of paper recounting how Richards captured the picture after trying for over fifty years to "jump" his own whale out in the ocean and photograph him. Finally the day came. While out fishing off the coast of Santa Cruz, Richards spied a sooty cloud of "whale birds" through his binoculars and knew they must be following a whale. And so they were - a big "Sulphur Bottom Bull - a blue whale - all of seventy feet long and easily weighing seventy-five tons. Richards was able to get within 200 feet and watch him feed on thousands of sardines. But then a life or death drama ensued. A pair of killer whales, orcas, went by the boat toward the blue whale. Orcas are fast and ferocious and travel in small pods. Although much smaller, a few of them are capable of killing the largest of whales. They attacked this whale, causing him to rise out of the ocean in a mighty effort to escape. It was during this battle that Richards was able to get his prized photograph. The combat was continuing as the boat returned to shore. Richards writes that this was "probably the only photograph ever secured of the largest living creature know, taken in his native element, in a battle for existence." Given the mimeographed text and reference to Plastigmant camera lenses, the photograph probably dates from the 1950s. The photo is mounted on a bedraggled piece of grey cardboard, with the inscription "To my friend Charlie Bosworth from Bill Richards" written in white ink under the photo. The photo is in very good condition save for three marks that might have occurred during processing. They do not affect the image of the whale. It measures 8.5 x 10.5 inches. This compelling book was created as a collaborative project between Presidential Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco and contemporary landscape photographer Jacob Bond Hessler. In it, Blanco's powerful poetry is juxtaposed with Hessler's evocative photographs. From the Prospectus: "Blanco's poems and Hessler's phonographs together investigate the visible and invisible boundaries of race, gender, class, and ethnicity, among many others; they challenge the physical, imagined, and psychological dividing lines - both historic and current - that shadow America and perpetuate an us vs. them mindset by inciting irrational fears, hate, and prejudice. In contrast to the current narrowing definition of an America with very clear-cut boundaries, Blanco and Hessler cross and erase borders. As artists, they tear down barriers to understanding by pushing boundaries and exposing them for what they truly are - fabrications for the sake of manifesting power and oppression pitted against our hopes of indeed becoming a boundary-less nation in a boundary-less world."
