In addition to relating the history, the author also provides biographical sketches of those he terms "distinguished actors in our border wars" such as Col. Ebenezer Zane, General Andrew Lewis, General Daniel Brodhead, Captain Samuel Brady and more. Bound in original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt vignette of a Native American scalping a man. Debossed cloth designs, gilt titling to spine. Binding is bumped, rubbed, with a few light stains. Interior pages generally clean with brown spots occasionally to pages. With frontispiece illustration, three plates and one fold-out. With former owner bookplate to front pastedown, random black number and letters to free endpaper, and ownership signature of John A Wharton, Liberty VA, 1852. A desirable copy of this history. 1862. Hardcover. Very good in the original black publisher's cloth with gilt title to spine and gilt emblem to front cover. Chipping to book cloth along spine ends and minor wear to corners and edges of boards. There is a two inch split to the book cloth along the bottom of the front hinge and a dime sized loss to the book cloth on the front cover. With numerous illustrations including a fold out view of New York from the sea (1790), several fold-outs of bridges and reservours, several color fold-outs of army regiments leaving the city during 1861, a large fold out of "Old New York - The Bouwery", and more. Several of the fold outs have closed tears and extra creases. Clean and bright. Previous owner's signature in pencil on front free endpaper. 775 pages. NY/022118. Very Good.

Both hinges are starting to split with cracks starting on the tops and bottoms of both. Minor wear to corners and edges of boards. With numerous illustrations including a large fold out Nicholls map of New York (1664-8), a fold out of the Steam Ship Roanoke, a color fold out view of Harlem (1765), several color plates of New York homes, and more. A few of the fold outs have closed tears. Dampstaining to bottom and top corners of later pages. 852 pages. NY/022118. Very Good.
