Milan: Dalla Stamperia Reale, 1810. Hardcover. Giuseppe Bossi (1777 – 1815) was an Italian painter, arts administrator and writer on art. He ranks among the foremost figures of Neoclassical culture in Lombardy, along with Ugo Foscolo, Giuseppe Parini, Andrea Appiani or Manzoni. Bossi devoted a large part of his life to the study of the works of Leonardo, whose drawing manner he imitated accurately enough for his productions to have passed as Leonardos and his last work was a series of drawings in monochrome representing incidents in the life of that great master. He left unfinished a large cartoon in black chalk of the Dead Christ in the bosom of Mary, with John and the Magdalene. In 1810 he published this monumental work titled Del Cenacolo di Leonardo da Vinci, which had the merit of greatly interesting Goethe, who shared Bossi's urgent dream of saving Leonardo's fresco [Wikipedia]. This work comprises four books dealing with different aspects of Da Vinci's life and art. Large folio bound in full brown leather with gilt ornament to front cover, raised spine bands and gilt titling to black leather spine label. Leather is scraped, rubbed, soiled and bumped, and spine has been rebacked. Evidence of library call number at bottom of spine and glue remnants on rear pastedown where signout card removed. A.e.g. Text pages are generally clean and bright with some age toning to margins and occasional light foxing. Northampton MA: Cheloniidae Press, 1978. State Proof. One of only a few copies printed for Robinson's Masters Thesis Show in 1978. With title, state proof, and signature in pencil on the lower margin. This striking black and white print of Robinson in turtle armor and with an image of a turtle and its skeleton next to him anticipates his founding of the Cheloniidae Press the following year. Cheloniidae is the name given to a family of Sea Turtle species. Robinson is shown in profile up to his shoulders and his turtle armor on his head and body given him the air of a Renaissance man. The turtle images are meticulously and realistically depicted. Image is 17.5 x 23 inches on heavy paper measuring 21 x 27 inches. In fine condition. ORIGART/073117. Fine.
Brussels: G. Van Oest, 1912. Hardcover. Folio. Bellini (c.1400-c.1470) was a key figure in the development of Renaissance painting in northern Italy. He also founded something of a dynasty, with his sons and son-in-law, Andrea Mantegna, all becoming famous painters in their own right. Most of Bellini’s paintings have disappeared, and his two surviving sketchbooks, one at the Louvre and one at the British Museum, are how he is best remembered. These two oversized folio volumes lavishly reproduce the masterful drawings from each sketch book along with a facing description of each. Volume I has 134 plates and Volume II has 100. Many are on double pages and fold out. Very good in the original half vellum with brown paper boards and gilt title to spine and front boards. As with most heavy books, the joints show some splitting but have been repaired and are holding tight. The vellum has some soiling and spotting, and there is minor scuffing to the paper boards. The interior is bound tightly and is very clean. ART/8122. Very Good.

Every genuine Dali is illustrated along with details including number of prints, date of publication, papers and watermarks, and dimensions - all crucial information to distinguish real Dali from unauthorized editions and forgeries. New York: The Harry T Thomas Company, 1896. One of 540 copies of the scarce Autograph Edition signed by the author/artist. Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915) was an American author, artist and engineer born in Baltimore, Maryland, a descendant of Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He became a contractor in New York City and did much work for the Federal government, including the stone ice-breaker at Bridgeport, Connecticut, the jetties at the mouth of the Connecticut river, the foundation for the Bartholdi Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, and the Race Rock Lighthouse off New London, Connecticut. His vacations were spent sketching in the White Mountains, in Cuba, in Mexico, and afterwards in Venice, Constantinople and Holland. He published various volumes of travel illustrated by himself, including this work on Venice [Wikipedia]. This beautiful large folio is extensively illustrated both in color and black & white. There are 20 full page color plates and 21 in b&w, all protected by tissue guards. In addition there are numerous color and b&w text illustrations throughout the book. In his preface Smith wrote that his aim was to describe and depict the beauties of Venice that one sees in the sunlight of a summer's day. Bound in contemporary brown three quarter leather with marbled paper boards and endpapers. Leather is scraped and scuffed, with tear along top of spine. Paper boards are also scraped and worn. The interior pages are quite clean and bright. There is a margin stain on the free front endpaper but the rest of the book is very good plus. A very desirable copy of this homage to the magical city of Venice. 140 pages plus plates. This is very heavy book that will require extra postage. ART/012319.
