Parker served in a tour of Lorraine, the second Battle of the Marne, the Battle of St. Mihiel Salient, the Battle between the Meuse and the Argonne Forest, and more. Washington DC: Abstract Orange Press, 2017. Hardcover. Number 11 of 20 copies signed and numbered by the book artist. Lauren Emeritz is a book artist, letterpress printer and graphic artist and runs the Abstract Orange Press. She creates prints and books by hand using a Vandercook press and wood type, including type she designs and carves herself. Lauren holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Delaware. She is the President and Creative Director of Abstract Orange, a graphic design firm in Washington, DC, and a letterpress associate at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Hyattsville, Maryland. This boldly designed book is one of a series of books that Lauren has done using her handmade wooden type to explore letters, numbers, and shapes. In this accordion style book she has printed her hand carved wood numbers from 1 to 0 in various bright colors either on a single page or on a fold-out page. 1812. A leaf from The History of the Abbey Church or St. Peter's Westminster: Its Antiques and Monuments, by Rudolph Ackermann. In 1795 Ackermann set up a lithographic press and opened a business in copper lithographs. Ackermann was a creative and efficient publisher, who brought innovative techniques to the commercial production of color plate books as well as an uncompromising attention to detail which ensured uniform high quality. Print method is Engraving-Aquatint on India paper, measuring 343 x 278 mm. or approximately 13 1/2 x 11 inches. Archivally matted. #48672. Very Good.
San Francisco: American Trust Company, 1954. Paperback. First Edition. SIGNED BY ADAMS and dated May 25th 1980, Carmel on the dedication page. This book was commissioned by the American Trust Company on its one hundredth anniversary. Includes sixty photographs by Ansel Adams printed on high gloss paper. In soft covers bound with clear plastic spiral comb which has broken in several places but continues to hold the pages together. There are a few scuff marks to the covers and minor wear to the edges. London: Chiswick Press [Privately printed], 1888. Paperback. First Edition. Scarce. Presentation copy inscribed "To F. Coylestone with best wishes T. Ashe Feb. 1888." Thomas Ashe (1836-1889) was a minor English poet who was admired by some, including Michael Field, but his work was not popular with his generation. He has risen far enough to be included in many recent anthologies of mid-to late- Victorian verse. In original paper wrappers. Covers stained, creased on right corner, and chipped along edges. Philadelphia: 1870. This well-known lithograph is from the work Birds of America by John James Audubon, which has been printed in many editions. This print is from the 7th printing conducted by Audubon and Roe Lockwood in 1870-1871. Lockwood’s involvement has led this edition to commonly be known as the Lockwood edition. Other than the colored backgrounds, which were added to the post-first editions, the main images on these prints are, for the most part, identical to those of the First edition and feature hand coloring. J.T. Bowen was lithographer for the work, which was published in Philadelphia. These are some of the best examples of hand-colored work in America and are highly collectible. They are on fine heavy stock paper measuring 6 7/8 x 10 ½ inches. Double matted in wood frame. #43659. Fine.
Richmond, VA: Monalisa Bagby, 2020. One of four copies signed and numbered by the book artist. Lisa Bagby describes this intricate and mysterious book as "a magical tale of how beauty enters the world and the intertwine of fate and potential." She explores her theme by following the journey of an unnamed good woman who realizes that as she responds to circumstances over which she has no control that she is realizing her potential in ways she could not have imagined. The artist incorporates striking visual and structural designs throughout this book to trace the course of the good woman's journey. They include screen printed patterns of foliage and shapes, the use of colors and various papers to delineate the text, pop-ups and reverse pop-ups, and images from a Liechtenstein print, and a Chagall painting. The backs of the pages of this concertina book are also screen printed using the colors black, orange, and gray. All of the images on the back relate to the story unfolding on the front side. They include the constellation Ursa Major to refer to the mention of a black bear, while an image of a polar bear refers to stories told to the good woman about the North people. Postage stamps of birds pasted in pertain to their cacophony. Printed in Roboto on Rives paper, with insertions of various other fonts. It is bound in grey cloth with maroon floral designs on the front cover, with a black string tie with a maroon and cream button attached. In fine condition. Measures 8.25 x 8.25 x 1 inches. Includes seven extra portraits, including a proof portrait of Mrs. Bannister and a mezzotint portrait of Charles Bannister, after a painting by R. Dighton. English actor and theater manager, Bannister (1760 -1836) was considered to be the best low comedian of his day. Later in his life, he managed the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in Covent Garden. Bound in three quarter tan leather over marbled paper covered boards with red label "Stage Biography" and green title / author label beneath. This is part of a series of books Daly had bound in a matching style, all labeled "Stage Biography." Rubbing, pulling, and wear to leather. According to the printer: "Our fascination with [Wagener's] work is a response to the meticulous attention to detail which imbues all his engravings, combined with a ‘democracy of aesthetic’ which allows both realism and abstraction equal weight. In a Parenthesis review of Wagener’s early book with Peter Koch, Zebra Noise with a Flatted Seventh, Simon Brett said ‘No one else I know of is making such avant-garde grand opera in wood-engraved prints.’" Richard Wagener (1944 - ) is a Californian wood engraver known best for his depictions of nature and animals, often juxtaposed against abstract imagery. A specially commissioned frontispiece, new press device, and patterned papers have been created for this edition. Folio. Mission, BC: Barbarian Press, 2020. Hardcover. One of 110 copies. A beautiful new publication from the esteemed Barbarian Press. Jan Zwicky is a philosopher and a poet. Crispin and Jan Elsted, proprietors of the press, write that it has been almost twenty years since they published Zwicky's 21 Small Songs, and that a return to one of their favorite contemporary poets was long overdue. Her lyrical poems are accompanied by eight black and white tipped in photographs by her friend and professional photographer Robert Moody. The book was designed by Crispin Elsted. Printed in Van Dijck type and printed on Zerkall Smooth White Wove paper. The type setting was by daughter Apollonia Felicity Elsted, who worked with Jan Elsted on the printing. San Diego: Bay Park Press, 2006. Hardcover. Founded by Sibyl Rubottom and Jim Machacek in 2000, the Bay Park Press produces artists’ books, offers classes, and holds book arts exhibitions. Their books address a wide range of subjects from the universe to gardening to opera to Yiddish and more. Most are letterpress printed, many have moveable pieces, and all are illustrated. Number 3 of 10 copies. In her colophon, Sibyl Rubottom gives her love and thanks “to the father I never knew who named me Sibyl hoping I would be shrewd in business. That did not occur, but I did end up making books.” This beautiful book is about five ancient Sibyls, including how they were depicted in Western art. These Sibyls are the Cumean, Delphic, Erythraean, Persian, and the Libyan. They offered prophecies, often through the use of leaves, as being from the thoughts of the gods. There is a brief description of each, accompanied by an intaglio leaf print and a reproduction of each Sibyl from the work of Michelangelo (four plates) or Velasquez (one plate). Each Sibyl is presented within a fold-out page with the description on the facing page and the plate and illustration inside the fold. Bound in red cloth with green spine, with title and author on front cover. The book was printed on Dutch etching paper in Bodoni, Bernard Modern, Albertus, and Patatino types. There are eight intaglio prints, each signed by the book artist. Housed in a brown paper covered case lined with the same red cloth as the book covers. . An original drawing by Aubrey Beardsley. Beardsley (1872-1898) is the best known illustrator from the British 1890s. He lived a tragically short time, dying of tuberculosis at the age of 25. This lovely major work, the epitome of Beardsley’s style of art nouveau, is for the spine of the binding cases of Sir Thomas Malory, Le morte Darthur, published by J. M. Dent, 1893-94, Beardsley’s first important commission. The book's title (spelled incorrectly as “La Morte Darthur”), author, publisher, and date are included in the design, which is in fact drawn on four separate pieces of paper that have been adhered together. Malory's Le Morte Darthur, published by Dent has been described as incomparable. The same can be said of Aubrey Beardsley's beautiful and remarkable designs (a term he preferred to "illustrations"). Beardsley was only 20 years old when Dent commissioned him to do all of the designs for this work. It was a leap of faith by Dent in taking a chance on an unproven artist. The illustrations were done during 1892-1894 for the initial issue in parts, beginning in June 1893. The design is done in ink on paper with pencil under-drawing showing the change from the initial position of the leaves, on four separate pieces of paper, the title and top border inset above the ornamental panel ; 27 x 6.7 cm. New York: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc., . Hardcover. Inscribed by the playwright. First edition of this well-received Broadway play, which ran in New York between November 1931 and February 1932. Berhman (1893-1973) was a prolific playwright and screenwriter, perhaps best known for his “high comedies” which were so popular in the 1930s. This copy was inscribed to Dame Nellie Burton, Berhman’s landlady when he stayed in London. Miss Burton ran a famous lodging house on Half Moon Street, where lived, among other notables, Siegfried Sassoon and Robbie Ross, the latter being one of Oscar Wilde’s closest friends. The inscription reads “For Miss Burton, with love from her devoted Sam, London Apr. 1932.” Laid in is a typed letter to Berhman from the Stanley Rose bookstore, informing him that the copy of Brief Moment he had sent to Miss Burton at her address on Half Moon Street was returned to sender, “party gone away.” Bound in red cloth with title and author in black on front cover and spine. The interior is bright and clean with some light spotting to fore-edge. The jacket has small tears to top and bottom of spine. In near fine condition with very good jacket. This was Birrell’s first book of essays and brought him success as a writer. Birrell was a politican who served for several years as Secretary of Ireland. There is an interesting hand written sentence on the first page of the last chapter titled “Falstaff.” It says “It ain’t mine/A.B.” In very good condition in the original green cloth with gilt title and small rectangle gilt design to front cover. Spine faded and some bumping to spine and corners. Interior pages are clean with slight pulling away of rear hinge. A nice copy of this relatively scarce book. 234 pages. LIT/032111. Very Good.
Paris: 1785. Snapper. Plate number 256 from the book Ichithyologi, Ou Histoire Naturelle, Generale Et Particuliere, Des Poissons. Printed in Paris and Berlin, 1785 – 1797. Size: 8 1/8 inches x 15 7/8 inches. Marcus Bloch, 1723 – 1799, was a German physician from Berlin who spent the earlier part of his career studying intestinal worms. At the age of 57, Bloch turned to the study of fish, and set the task of providing full descriptions and illustrations, in a splendid style, of the species known to him. One of the earliest students of fish, Bloch published a series of fish prints titled: Ichithyologi, Ou histoire naturelle generale et particuliere, Des Poissons, in which he described over 200 species for the first time. The prints remained a primary reference source for the next century. Bloch issued folio and octavo prints and each specimen was engraved on a copper plate and then hand-colored with watercolors. The plates contain the names of each fish in several languages. Framed. #34607.

Book artist Pat Sweet is a master of inventive and intricate miniature books, bookish objects, and globes and tellurions. She describes her book as follows: "Three Rats At Sea' is a product of my love of illuminated manuscripts and their creators. As a maker of miniature books, I can't help feeling a kinship with those anonymous artists of the past (and the present). The detail and imagination of these works is something I have always tried to achieve in my own books, to add dense layers of idea and image to the main story; a counterpoint to the melody. I've told the story of my three brave rats in three parts. The first is the introductory text: the story, told in a miniature book. The next is the “real” illuminated manuscript, ' Mures ad Mare (Rats at Sea),' from which I took my story and its world, where rats embark upon voyages of adventure. The third is the pop-up version of the tale told by Sir Bruno’s manuscript and its miniatures, with 8 pop-ups. . Given time, I’m sure I could bake more layers for this little mock-medieval cake, but for now, here’s the story of brave Sir Bruno, his squire Whitby, their servant Pebble on a voyage and adventure upon the sea. The book is bound in turquoise and gold Japanese chiyogami paper, with a metallic gold paper spine and a brass magnetic closure. " The illuminated manuscript is a laid-in booklet. Barcelona: Carla Busquets, 2018. Number 4 of 10 copies. Signed and numbered by the artist on the back of the last leaf. The images in this limited edition book are taken from a unique version of the work that had eight original ink drawings on four folios mounted on five wooden dowels. The piano hinge structure is based on innovations by renowned book artist Hedi Kyle. Formerly a conservator in the UK, Canada, and Spain, Busquets, a skilled young paper artist, opened her own studio, la Frivé, last year where she hosts workshops for paper artists of all ages in addition to practicing her craft. In her artist's statement Busquets says: "I mostly work with paper. I love the versatility of the material, how easy it is to manipulate and also the skill required to turn it into delicate work... I use drawing and paper to explore the boundaries of book structures to to create a story. Imagining a picture that goes beyond the illustration with mobile and tri-dimensional parts as in pop-up books gives me new possibilities to transport the spectator." In this marvelous work Busquets depicts the fearsome Kraken, a legendary creature that resembled a giant squid and was known for destroying ships. Here its massive tentacles rise from the churning waves as it approaches a doomed ship. Digitally printed and handcut and mounted. Housed in original custom box covered with paste paper. Relay, MD: Calvert Distilling Company, 1940, 1941,1942. Softcover. A rare internally published bulletin from this former Maryland distillery. The Calvert Distilling Co. bought the Maryland Distillery in 1934. The Maryland Distillery was established in 1933 as the first legal whiskey still in Maryland after the repeal of prohibition. This publication was intended as a manual for the distillery's tour guides. It is a dense and lengthy document covering all aspects of the distillery's operations. There are many charts, tables, and diagrams on blending, flavoring and concentrations. There are also sections on government regulations, cleanliness and sanitation, and more. Calvert's Distilling was later taken over by Seagram's in 1939 and they continued producing Calvert Whiskey at this location. This publication was produced by mimeograph and has several sections individually paginated, including addenda dated 1941 and 1942. The entire publication has more than 100 pages. In a softcover report cover that is quite soiled, stained, and creased. Internal pages are very good although some of the print is light. With distillery's library stamp on first page. Very Good.
Ulm, Germany: Johann Reger. This is a full-page incunabula leaf woodblock print with caption in Latin on paper from the "Rhodiorum Historia or History" of Rhodes by Guillelmi Caoursin which is one of the few incunabula that mentions the Order of St. John. Johann Reger printed it in the German city of Ulm in 1496. The leaf measures 274 x 194 mm with a 212 x 125 mm print entitled: "Beorius to be Hung." The verso contains 29 lines of Gothic script printed single column in Latin. (Hain 4368). Framed. #2029. Fine.
Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae Press, 1982. Hardcover. UNIQUE COPY WITH A SET OF THE 26 ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWINGS BY ALAN JAMES ROBINSON. There were 300 copies of this book published; 200 were regular copies, 50 were deluxe copies with quarter leather binding and 50 others bound in full leather. The deluxe editions were issued with a set of proofs of the wood engravings and a set of proofs of the line-cut initials, with a large calligraphic manuscript initial beneath each image. The wood engraving proofs are lettered and signed by Robinson, and the line-cut proofs are signed both by Robinson and the calligrapher, Elizabeth Curtis. This copy shows some variation from the copies described in the prospectus. The colophon has been signed and numbered VI of L and internally seems to be a straightforward copy of the deluxe full leather edition. The binding varies somewhat from that pictured in the prospectus but uses many of the same elements. Also, the chemise is thicker that the regular chemise because it contains the 26 pencil drawings. This may have been a special copy prepared by Robinson for a particular subscriber/collector. This wonderful abecedary illustrates each letter of the alphabet with a masterful wood engraving by Robinson. Each animal is described at the bottom of its page in texts chosen primarily from the earliest first-hand accounts of the animal depicted. The descriptions are printed in red. The printed source of each text is identified, and at the end of the book there is a detailed and useful bibliography of these sources. A page with a small, different illustration of the animal precedes each animal’s page, with the calligraphic letter written in red by Curtis. The animals depicted are often wondrous and strange, and some, such as the basilisk, may never have actually existed. This is a two volume folio (including a chemise containing an additional suite of illustrations, and the group of original pencil drawings). The bound volume is in full red morocco, done by David Bourbeau of the Thistle Bindery. The covers have a large central, slightly sunken panel, with the title in red and black and with a Sea Turtle device blocked in blind (Cheloniidae is the name for a species of sea turtles). The proofs contained in the chemise are unbound as issued within the original red morocco-backed, linen cloth covered boards. Both volumes are housed in a red morocco-backed cloth covered box, with the spine lettered and dated in gilt and a small Sea Turtle device in blind. “The blocks were cut by the artist at the Cheloniidae Press & printed by Harold P. McGrath in the summer of 1982.... Mackenzie-Harris set the types in monotype with some hand-setting by Arthur Larson. The text was compiled and annotated by Laurie Block. This is the latest version of The Hunting of the Snark to be published by the Cheshire Press. Carroll's famous nonsense poem has been subject to numerous interpretations over time. In this truly snarky edition, Walker has chosen President Donald Trump and his White House cabinet and advisors for his 21st century lineup of the characters. He writes: "...I think they match up nicely to to the crew of the ship. When you read the poem and think of Trump's cabinet, it's hard not to see the parallels. The political arena in the USA could be described as nonsense, which is exactly the type of poem [this] is. The plot follows a crew of ten unqualified professionals trying to hunt the Snark with a blank map." Thus such familiar names as Scaramucci, Sessions, Priebus, Pence, Mnuchin, Bannon, Sanders and Trump himself appear in parts that reflect their real-life attributes and roles. This memoir celebrates the life of Canadian science fiction author Charles Grant Blairfindle Allen (1848 - 1899). After teaching in grade school for several years, he became a professor of moral philosophy in Jamaica, where he developed his evolutionary system of philosophy. His literary career began with non-fiction essays on popular science, and he later went on to write nearly 30 fiction novels. He is considered to be a pioneer of the science fiction and detective fiction genres. Bound in original dark brown cloth boards with gilt title to spine. Maureen Cummins, 2016. Hardcover. Number 34 of 40 copies. Signed the artist. In this powerful work, noted book artist Maureen Cummins investigates the dark side of the history of psychosurgery, as exemplified by the career of Doctor Walter Freeman (1895-1972), a professor of neurology who became known as the father of lobotomy by single-handedly popularizing the pre-frontal lobotomy in America. Although he had no formal training in either surgery or psychology, Freeman modified the traditional procedure for lobotomies by driving ice picks through his patients’ eye sockets rather than drilling into the skull to sever nerve connections in the prefrontal cortex to treat mental illness. Despite his championing of his procedure he admitted that lobotomies often created childlike behavior or a vegetative state in patients. Hundreds of patients died. The controversial procedure also raised numerous questions about patients’ rights, the abuse of institutional power, and the disproportionate targeting of women. Of the more than 3000 patients that Freeman operated on, two-thirds were women. Cummins uses physical rape as an analogy for neurological penetration, a form of sexualized violence that was perpetuated for decades in the name of medical progress. She visualizes this by a series of laser cut holes that bore through each page, becoming smaller page by page.The holes penetrate reproduced images of lobotomy patients’ heads and on the last page the title “The Rapist” becomes “Therapist?” The images of women are from 'before-and-after” photos used in Freeman’s textbook, which are re-contextualized, with lines of typography serving as blindfolds, reclaiming for these women a measure of dignity, humanity, and anonymity. The pages of the book are laser-cut aluminum with silkscreen-printed text and imagery. The covers are also laser-cut aluminum with a large hole that reveals the subsequent holes and "The" and "rapist" on either side of the cover's hole. McCollough, his successor. McCollough became known as Sweet Daddy McCollough after his rise to leadership. His accomplishments and the spread of the church throughout the country are documented, and there are photos of him over time as well as pictures of the many churches founded in various cities. A charming and scarce copy of Debussy's ballet score (piano reduction only) for “La Boite a Joujoux,” with delightful color pochoir illustrations by Andre Helle. The ballet was inspired by Debussy's daughter and her toys and toy box. This was one of Debussy's final works, and the ballet was in fact not staged until after his death, with costumes and decor by Helle. Published in hardbound and softbound editions, this copy has been recased in tan paper-covered boards with a digital reproduction of Helle's illustrated title affixed to front cover.
